The Indian wing of Audi is known for launching cars which are generally alien to the market of the country. Taking the same ideology in mind, the carmaker launched the affordable convertible sedan in the market in the form of A3 Cabriolet. The German carmaker launched the A3 Cabriolet in the year 2014 which was quite appreciated by the people. Following its overwhelming response, the automaker launched the facelifted version of the same in 2017. The updated car combines elegant looks with dynamic proportions. The facelifted Audi A3 Cabriolet 2017 comes with a host of upgrades that includes changes on the outside as well as inside. The vehicle also gets mechanical updates as well for better performance.
On the outside, the car now come in-line with the company’s latest design philosophy. Audi A3 Cabriolet gets subtle changes and the overall design resembles the new generation A4. The front profile gets new single frame radiator grille along with the refreshed bumper. The car also gets all-new LED headlamp setup with the new LED daytime running lights. On the sides, the new Audi A3 Cabriolet rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. The soft-top roof is lightweight and can be folded electronically up to the maximum speed of 50kmph. While at the rear, the car gets revised bumper and new LED tail lamps.
Dimensionally, the car remains the same as of the outgoing version. The vehicle measures 4423mm in length, 1960mm in width, 1409mm in height while the wheelbase stands at 2595mm. Audi A3 cabriolet is offered in vibrant shades namely Florett Silver, Tango Red, Cosmos Blue, Monsoon Grey, Vegas Yellow, Glacier White, Ara Blue, Cosmos Blue, Beluga Brown, Ibis White, Nano Grey and Brilliant black. These are available in standard shades as well as in metallic and pearl effects.
Inside, the changes are pretty different as compared to the international version. The car does not get the virtual cockpit as well as the all-digital display for the dashboard. However, the Indian version does get all-new 7-inch retractable display screen with the MMI interface. The features that are new include three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, refreshed air vents finished in jet-exhaust, new Milano leather upholstery and Bang & Olufsen audio system as optional extras. Additionally, the cabriolet also features dual-zone climate control, park assist with sensors at both front and rear along with reverse camera.
Under the hood, Audi A3 cabriolet is powered by the 1.4L TFSI engine that replaces the older 1.8L unit. The petrol mill is capable of generating the power output of 150PS and the maximum torque of 250Nm. The engine comes mated to new 7-speed S-tronic automatic gearbox with cylinder on demand technology. In terms of fuel efficiency, the car is able to return 19.2kmpl.
As far as the safety is concerned, Audi comes loaded with 5 airbags, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Anti-slip regulation, Hill Assist, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program, Engine immobilizer, Traction Control, Central locking, rain sensing wipers and power door lock. Other safety aspects include first aid kit, interior mirror with dipping, auto dim IRVM and warning triangle.
At present, Audi A3 Cabriolet is available in one variant only that is the A3 Cabriolet 1.4 TFSI. As per the pricing, it is tagged at Rs. 50.35 lakh, ex-showroom. The car presently does not have any direct competitors in India, but the closest rival in terms of styling is Mini Cooper S Convertible.

Get inside the car and you will be welcomed by the all-black interiors which many of us have become quite familiar with. The most interesting aspect of the cabin is that it is uncluttered and everything seems to be within the reach and easy to touch. The seats at the front are sporty and hug you well. But surprisingly, there is no electronic support for adjusting the seats in a Rs. 50 lakh car. The seats are manually adjustable and do have lumbar support as well as electrical adjustment knob. The steering wheel is now flat-bottomed for better steering position and a bit of leg clearance.
The center of attraction on the dashboard is the new 7-inch infotainment unit which beautifully slides in and pops out when needed. Though the system lacks touch input, it can be controlled by company’s MMI system that is intuitive and easy to use. For that perfect in-car music experience, there is standard 9-speaker set-up provided while there is also optional 13-speaker Bang & Olufsen 5.1 surround sound system which takes the music experience to a whole new level. It also does a special job besides providing excellent sound, it uses microphones to balance and cancel out any noise from the background peeping through the roof.
The car also gets an Auto Park feature and wireless charging option for Qi-enabled smartphones. As usual, the space at the rear is quite cramped and best for 2 adult individuals. The vehicle gets tiny buckets seats at the rear best to be utilized by kids. The rear passenger also gets their own ac blower, cup holders and 12V socket.
The main highlight or say the defining feature of the car is undoubtedly the retractable roof. In just under 20 seconds of time, the roofs tumble down into the boot to give you a proper outdoor driving experience. And all this can be done within the speed limit of 50kmph. Also, the boot space is quite decent and enough to hold your bags for a weekend trip. The minor changes have overall uplifted the aura of the car right to some extent.

Audi is one of the manufacturers who know the art of converting subtle into good. And this can be seen in the form of Audi A3 Cabriolet. It doesn’t have the charm of Mini Cooper and not overly dramatic, yet it turns the same number of heads on the go. In the updated version, there are cosmetic changes on the outside as well. The new A3 Cabriolet gets revamped bumpers which now look more aggressive, especially the rear one. The boomerang shaped headlights remain the same but this time around, the buyer can also opt for Matrix LED headlights which is a cool thing if you are driving the vehicle at nights. The grille has also been revised with the car getting typical Audi’s hexagonal design. There seems to be more aggressive creases on the bonnet as compared to the earlier version.
The side profile remains identical except the 16-inch alloy wheels which looks tad boring in appearance. There is strong shoulder line running across the length with another solid creases between the front and rear wheels which looks extremely gorgeous. And since it’s a convertible, it looks fabulous without the soft-top. Same as that of the front, at the rear, the car now features optional LED tail lights while the overall appearance looks quite sporty with the sharp design theme.

Mileage Running Cost

The Audi A3 Cabriolet is not just all-about looks and the luxury of driving countryside with a topless roof, but also excellent in terms of fuel economy. The vehicle delivers ARAI certified mileage of 19.2kmpl which is on paper but the real world fuel economy is also impressive with around 14kmpl, thanks to the lower capacity engine and cylinder deactivation technology.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension set-up of the new Audi A3 Cabriolet has been tuned to offer a wonderful ride, especially looking at our road conditions the performance is more than satisfactory. Though it’s a compact sized car in terms of driving dimensions, it’s well sorted out and leaves no room for complains.
There is slight roll while driving but it is well controlled with the chassis instilling a lot of confidence. Though darting into the corners offers a lot of fun, the driver would feel lack of grunt and would find it better to settle down at low pace. In terms of comfort, the small road undulations can be felt but they do not break the fun riding experience while large bumps are well absorbed with a little thud. The steering feels light and precise on your fingers but lacks adequate feedback.
Overall, the driving sensation is only intensified with topless roof and wind in the hair, all it just need is nice weather and open road.

Engine Performance

The major update comes in the form of new engine which is working in other family cars. The older 1.8L TFSI petrol engine has been replaced by 1.4L unit that comes from the same family of engines. The new motor produces 150PS and 250Nm of max torque. The unique thing about this powertrain is the cylinder-on-demand technology which essentially shuts down 2 cylinders when the engine isn’t under heavy load. The transmission remains the same 7-speed S-tronic gearbox which is silky smooth in transferring power.
Fire up the engine and you will be surprised how silent it is. The same engine also serves in Q3 SUV but its little audible irrespective in idle or on the go situation. In the cabriolet, even if you push hard you will hardly hear the engine sound. The car offers nearly identical driving experience as compared to its alter ego A3 sedan. The pottering in and around the city lounging in gaze of hundreds of staring eyes is really a wonderful experience.
The car is made for serene driving experience but if you are looking to give a shot of adrenaline into the equation, then you will be disappointed. As you press the accelerator pedal, there is dearth of displacement. And acceleration too is not extraordinary as 0-100kmph dash is performed just under 10 seconds. However, use the lovely and responsive paddle shifters and the joy of driving just increases further. Overall, people familiar with the older engine will definitely miss the grunt in this new one but the latter feels responsive and is refined too.
