The new 2018 Audi Q5 has been evolved in many ways and comes as the strong contender against the rivals. The luxury SUV market in the country as well as worldwide is flourishing at the high pace and seeing that many new models are getting launched day by day. Audi launched the new Q5 in the year 2015 and now company has brought the updated version of the same. The vehicle now gets edgier, larger and becomes lighter as compared to its older model. The first generation Audi Q5 was launched back in the year 2009 and instantly it become a hit. The new Q5 is about 90 kgs lighter thanks to its modular platform that utilizes aluminium and high strength steel for the construction. The new Audi Q5 has been touted as the best ‘Q’ with the ground breaking changes in each and every department.
In terms of looks, 2018 Audi Q5 looks like the mini Q7 from certain angles. The vehicle is based on the MLB EVO platform which is shared with the cars like Bentley Bentayga and is lighter as well. The 2018 Audi Q5 design is not revolutionary but has the sophisticated and sharp looks. The vehicle gets the attractive front radiator grille and sculptured bonnet. The front bumper looks sporty while the LED headlights and LED DRLs are very differently designed.
On the sides, the changes include 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels and chrome window surrounds. At the back, Audi Q5 gets new LED pattern for the tail lights and small under tray along with faux exhaust tips. Dimensionally, the car has been changed with the length now at 4663mm, width at 2140mm, height at 1659mm and the wheelbase has also been substantially increased which now measures 2819mm. Audi Q5 is offered in vibrant shades such as Ibis White, Monsoon Grey Metallic, Mythos Black Metallic, Navarra Blue Metallic and Floret Silver Metallic.
Talking about the interiors, second-generation Audi Q5 gets the modern and well-laid cabin. The all-new three spoke steering wheel is shared from the new A4 and Q7 models. The car gets state of the art technologies including 12.5inch virtual cockpit, 8.3-inch MMI infotainment screen that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features included in the list are steering mounted Audio control, rear parking sensors, cruise control, three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, head up display, wireless charging, ambient lighting system and predictive efficiency assist.
Audi Q5 is available in both the petrol and diesel engine options. The 2.0L diesel TDI mill is capable of generating the power output of 187bhp and the maximum torque of 400Nm. The diesel engine comes mated to new seven-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox. The ARAI certified fuel efficiency for the diesel variant stands at 17.01kmpl. The 2.0L petrol TFSI engine can churn the maximum output of 248bhp and belts out the peak torque of 370Nm. The petrol mill also comes with the same 7-speed S Tronic Automatic transmission assisting the engine to offer the fuel efficiency figures of 12kmpl.
As far as the safety aspects is concerned, the luxurious Audi Q5 is loaded with various features such as 8 airbags, ABS, Electronic Brakeforce distribution, Brake Assist, Electronic stability Program, Hill Assist, Traction Control, Child Safety Lock, Central Locking, Engine immobilizer, Automatic headlamps and Power door lock. The premium Audi Q5 locks horns with the likes such as Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 in the segment.
Currently, Audi Q5 is available in two variant namely Premium Plus and Technology. The price for the Q5 Premium plus 2.0 TFSI and diesel variant Q5 35TDI is Rs. 55.27 lakh while the Q5 technology 2.0 TFSI and Q5 35TDI Technology are tagged at Rs. 59.79 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.

Almost everything in the cabin has been refurbished. The dual-tone cabin along with new fittings looks fantastic. The freshness comes in the form of new free floating centre display and the new controls for Audi’s MMI unit. The carmaker has also added a touchpad controller but it can only be used for recognizing handwriting in case you want to search contacts in your phonebook. Here also, you will find a few things shared from elder sibling Q7 such as the new yacht-styled gear selector.
But what the Q5 doesn’t get is the large single-piece air conditioner grille and retractable centre screen of Q7. Though you will get Audi’s Virtual Cockpit but you have to shell out extra as its available only on the top end Technology variant. The virtual cockpit practically replaces conventional instrument cluster dials with crispy looking full LCD screen that besides showing crucial information of the vehicle, displays the map while using navigation. It seems, especially for the driver, it’s a giant leap over the earlier model.
The car gets a nice combination of artificial and real leather with the option for going either dual tone beige/black or all-black colour scheme. Both the seats at the front are electrically adjustable while the new 3-spoke steering wheel is wrapped in leather featuring multiple controls for audio and telephony. All this makes the driving experience even better. In terms of spaciousness, the cabin undoubtedly feels airy, a major credit of which goes to the large panoramic sunroof and the huge window area.
Another downside which was seen in the earlier model was the lack of space at the rear. This feedback has been fairly addressed by the carmaker as it has increased the wheelbase which directly translates to improved cabin space. That said, there is now ample headroom and knee room with the 6-feet tall can be easily accommodated. Moreover, the rear passengers also get AC vents with temperature control setting to enjoy the comfort of being chauffeur driven. With the increase in the car size, the boot space has also been improved which now can absorb 550L of luggage space. And when 40-20-40 rear split folding is applied, then there is monumental increase of 1000L totalling to 1550L of boot space.
List of equipment also include 3-zone electronic climate control, cruise control, smartphone compatibility with support of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rain sensing wiper, wireless phone charging, 360-degree surround camera, powered tailgate, keyless engine start/stop and automatic headlamps. Overall, the new Q5 is a huge leap forward from the previous model.

The car underpins the Evo platform which can be seen in other cars such as Bentley Bentayga of the Volkswagen family. Though the car looks quite identical to the outgoing version, there are several tweaks across the vehicle. It seems the carmaker has gone for an evolutionary approach. When viewed from the three-quarter the car looks identical to the earlier model. The trend of sophistication continues with the all-LED headlamps and distinctive LED DRLs which have always been the highlight of this car. The squared-off hexagonal grille is also reminiscent of the previous model, so the sculpted bonnet. The bumper at the front has been redesigned to add to the overall superiority.
The side profile continues to showcase the same flair with some new alterations. The new 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels looks a bit ordinary while there are chrome accents around the windows. As far as rear profile is concerned, one can argue that it is the same, but the LED taillights have intricate details with sharp creases look awesome. And the new pattern of the LED dynamic turn indicators will compel you to complement the changes. The rear under tray completes the modifications outside.

Mileage Running Cost

The changes under the hood also reflect the improvement made in the efficiency department. Where the petrol mileage is still on the lower side at 8.5kmpl, the diesel version now delivers impressive mileage of 17kmpl, certified by ARAI. This is indeed a brilliant improvement from the previous model and that too in the SUV of this stature.

Comfort Suspension

The updated Audi Q5 features the same independent suspension set-up all around which was there in the earlier model. But now it also gets adaptive dampers as a standard fitment. This allows the driver to tune the suspension according to the driving mode selected. But still it is behind the air suspension which is quite sophisticated.
In the Comfort mode, you will get a more nimble ride quality especially on the rumbling roads. The car is able to smother plenty of vertical movements on short bumps. But sharper potholes can be felt inside the cabin. The suspension gets a little stiffer when Dynamic mode is selected. This give the best sports driving experience reducing body roll but some might feel little discomfort over broken roads.

Engine Performance

Audi currently offers both diesel and petrol engine in India with the latter being the new addition. The diesel engine is one of the best in Volkswagen group of engines i.e. 2.0L 4-cylinder unit which produces 190PS and 400Nm of max torque. The power might not be impressive but it’s the torque figure which gives the engine a real strength. It means in whichever gear your car is, stepping on the accelerator gives you quick response. There is minute turbo lag and even if you are driving at city speeds, the car will need little effort.
The German automaker says with this engine, the car can get touch the 100kmph from nil in less than 8 seconds. This improvement is due to the new platform which has helped the car shed around 65kg of weight. The 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission offers swift and smooth gear changes. The auto mode works so well that the only time you need paddle shifters is when you are in an aggressive mood of driving.
The petrol engine is the new star of the package. The 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged unit which pumps 252PS and 370Nm of max torque. The power is transferred to all the wheels via Ultra Quattro AWD system. In terms of performance, the car with the petrol engine seems to a bit hesitant in starting-off. However, as the revs build-up, the engine makes a strong come back.
The gearshifts are seamless while the upshifts are precise keeping you at the right time of the gear change. The Sport mode offer ready access to power and keeps the engine in the upper ranges of the power bands. Other driving modes available in the car include Comfort, Dynamic, Individual and Off-road, all adjust the suspension, steering, engine as well as air conditioning to match the driving style. Overall, both the engines perform well and won’t leave room for complaints in day to day driving and seldom off-roading.

Braking Safety

The braking system performs extremely well in bringing the car to halt without any fuss. Further, the electronic aids such as ABS with EBD and Brake Assist boost the overall stopping power. In terms of safety, the car comes loaded with 8 airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, Active Lane Assist, Blind Spot Warning, auto hold function, electromechanical parking brake, Collision Avoidance Assist and front and rear parking camera. All this safety cover has enabled the car grab 5-star safety ratings in the Euro NCAP.
