The BMW X3 is a potent candidate in the luxury SUV market. The X3 is priced right and makes for an attractive proposition for prospective buyers. The BMW X3’s large dimensions give it good road presence, and the company’s signature design cues means that the SUV has an unmistakable BMW appearance. The current model of the X3 looks grown up over it’s predecessor with it’s bold dual kidney grille design, angular head lamps and chunky front bumper.

The side profile of the car has an angular window line, large doors and a plastic cladded rocker panel. The X3 also comes with the signature BMW shark fin radio ariel. Subtle roof rails finished in silver run along either side of the roof of the X3.

Around the back, the BMW X3 is characterized by large tail lamps that have the signature horizontal LED strips flowing across the lower section. The tailgate is well sculpted with strong creases running along the lower section as well as below the rear windshield. The license plate is housed in the centre of the tail gate. The rear bumper of the BMW X3 is a large unit that houses reflectors on either end and has a black plastic lower section with a silver colour centre section. The 2.0 litre diesel version has a single chrome tail pipe housed on the left side.

Inside, it’s business as usual for the X3 as it comes with trademark BMW interiors. A black top section and centre console, with beige inserts on either side of the lower sections of the dash. The instrument cluster is well laid out and is clear to read. The rest of the cabin is finished in beige that lends an airy ambiance to what is an already spacious cabin. The seats are large and comfortable units. The X3 is a well equipped car overall in terms of equipment and safety features.

On the road, the BMW X3 has a commendable powertrain as well as chassis and suspension setup. The SUV is powerful and has good rear world performance. The ride is comfortable and the vehicle has very good handling traits.

The high seating position makes getting in to the X3 convenient, whilst also optimising visibility. As you settle in, you notice that the seats are firm, large, with good all-round support, the front seats can be adjusted electronically. The dash layout is truly BMW style, using the characteristic three-dimensional surface design, with a mix of wooden trims, leather and some brush metal highlights. The instrument panel uses Black Panel technology, straight out of the luxurious 7 Series. It combines state-of-the-art display technology with a classic round instrument look. The materials used look good and are built to last. It has phone and audio control buttons on the steering wheel, but there are no paddle shifters. The standard equipment include iPod and USB interfaces, Bluetooth connectivity, rear camera, an anti-theft alarm and all-wheel drive system. The rear seats are split at a ratio of 40:20:40 and the three backrests can be folded down either individually or together. This increases the luggage compartment size from 550 litres to 1,600 litres, which would make room for anything that one would consider carrying for a weekend getaway.
