Overview

Honda’s small car was launched in India back in the year 2011, and it is one of the oldest offerings in the company’s line-up. Honda’s cute and cheerful hatch had not received any change in the past five years span since its launch. The nip and tuck for the Brio were long overdue as it’s been around for nearly half a decade. Now the hatchback has been provided with the much-needed updates in the 2016 version to take on the competition. The vehicle now receives some cosmetic changes along with the long list of additional features while its engine remains unaltered.
On the outside, Honda Brio’s basic shape remains the same but plenty has been done to enhance the outer design. The updates given to Brio are subtle but it does make a slightly sportier appeal. The Brio has always been a unique looking car but the updates given, finally add some freshness to the design. The gloss black radiator grille up front and the sleek bumper with the fresh details are inspired from the Amaze. The headlamps design remains the same except a slight addition of black inserts. The side profile remains untouched while the rear part gets tweaked tail lights and revised spoiler along with LED lights. Honda Brio is available in five different colour pallets namely Alabaster Silver, Urban Titanium, White Orchid Pearl, Taffeta White and Rally Red.
The area where Brio needed the most attention was the cabin. The older dashboard in Brio looked unpleasing but has now been replaced by a new one lifted from Amaze and BR-V. The Brio gets the dual-tone interiors with chrome accents on the dash while its top-spec model gets sporty black interiors. Centre console gets music system that has Bluetooth phone integration and audio streaming. Below that it gets automatic climate control switches on display. The instrument cluster has a digital trip meter and three-dial analogue unit along with warning lights. In the facelift version, the seats are done up in premium beige and black fabric upholstery. The car now gets digital AC controls with maximum cool function and has advanced 2 DIN Audio system.
New Honda Brio facelift is powered by the same petrol mill that is doing its duties in the older version. It gets the 1.2L i-VTEC engine that is capable of generating the power output of 88PS and yields the peak torque of 109Nm. The mill comes mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. Honda also offers the five-speed automatic transmission with the Brio but it’s only available in the top-spec VX variant.
On the safety front, the Honda Brio facelift is loaded with features such as dual SRS airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force distribution (EBD), and seatbelt pre-tensioners. Further, it comes equipped with Advanced Compatibility Engineering and while the front features Pedestrian Injury Mitigation that is designed to absorb impact energy.
Honda Brio is offered in three variant such as E, S and VX. Taking a quick glance at its pricing details, the base trim E is available at the price tag of Rs. 4.73 lakh, its mid-range trim as well as the best-selling model S is tagged at Rs. 5.23 lakh. The top range trim VX MT is available at Rs. 5.97 lakh while the VX AT variant is offered at the price tag of Rs. 6.82 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. Though the Brio has been improved on several fronts, the fact remains that with the presence of cars such as Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 and Ford Figo, the road ahead is definitely tough.

Interior

The one area which needed the most attention is the cabin. The original plain jane dashboard has now been replaced with a more sophisticated one. This new dash is the one we have seen in Amaze and BR-V. The quality is much better and lends a contemporary look to the car. The all-black theme and dull silver highlights along with faux carbon fibre garnish add to the sportiness. The black or beige layout seems to be functional and ergonomics are also bang-on. And this can be seen in the fact that everything from knobs, switches to the digital air-conditioning controls are within the realm of the passengers.
Other notable inclusion is the revised instrument cluster that features new MID display and blue illuminated rings. Then there is new 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-In connectivity that does contribute to the entertainment package. Other than these, the interiors of Brio remain intact with the same skinny and comfortable seats. The driver seat is height adjustable while the steering is tilt adjustable. The rear seats though offer short seat cushioning and low on under-thigh support, it gives decent legroom to the passengers. Other comfort features include steering mounted audio controls, all power windows and foldable rear seat back.

Exterior

The changes outside are nominal. The cutesy face of the small hatch remains intact but plenty has been done in order to enhance its appeal. Like the new nose seen in the Honda Amaze, Brio too gets an all-new grille, but instead of chrome grille in Amaze, the Brio gets glossy black one. Other than this, the front facia features revised bumper which looks a lot more defined, featuring faux air intake and two fog lamps on each corner. Though the car looks more mature than before, some may prefer the previous design.
The side profile remains the same, however, it’s the rear which witnesses some alteration. The taillights are revamped while the carmaker has also added a new roof-mounted spoiler which also enhances the looks right to some extent. Apart from this, the glass-hatch is unique to this car, but still, there is no rear wiper in the hatch which is no less than a surprise.

Mileage Running Cost

Honda Brio comes with a refined, tried and tested petrol engine that is known for excellent fuel efficiency. The claimed fuel efficiency of the car stands at 18.5kmpl for the manual and 16.5kmpl for the automatic variant. The mileage seems to be a bit low as compared to the rivals.

Comfort Suspension

Another area where Brio comes with flying colours is how composed the car feels on the roads, especially when dealing with corners. The car is a lovely runabout and the light steering, soft suspension and light clutch bear this testimony. The suspension is well-tuned; however, running over broken roads is still a reason for worry.

Engine Performance

Under the hood, the car continues to be powered by the same 1.2L i-VTEC 4-cylinder petrol engine. This is the same engine which is working under Honda Jazz. The engine with programmed fuel injection technology pumps out 88PS and 109Nm of max torque. The motor is paired with either 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic, depending on the variant one chooses.
The engine as always is a peppy one to drive in the towns. Where 5-speed manual transmission offers crispy shifts, the 5-speed automatic is no less in smoothness and responsiveness. The car also scores brownie points when it comes to vibrations and noise in the urban driving setup.

Braking Safety

Brio features disk brake at the front and drum at the rear. For fast runs, the brakes have adequate punch while the pedal bite is also strong. The car comes with ABS and EBD for additional braking safety. Further, the safety of the passenger is ensured by dual front airbags, engine immobilizer, and rear windshield defogger.
