Honda first rolled out the Jazz hatchback in the year 2009 and then revived it in 2015 in a bid to give something new in the premium hatch segment. Since its revival in 2015, it didn’t get any updates until Honda recently decided to give it a minor facelift. The 2018 version of the Jazz has been given subtle changes with the outside getting same silhouette and same features as the older version. The new 2018 Honda Jazz on the inside gets some additional features over the pre-facelift model while it remains practical as before. The mechanical also remain identical. This time Honda has updated its variant list as well. The base trims E and the mid-spec SV trim has been omitted from the list. While, it’s new base S trim is only available with diesel engine.
The new Honda Jazz now looks sportier and sleeker than before. And all this is done due to Honda’s Exciting H design philosophy. New generation Honda Jazz doesn’t have any noticeable changes on the outside, it looks the same as the older version. On the sides, Jazz now gets the new sets of 15-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, its gets LED light guides on the tail lamps. Other than this all the other features are identical of its older version. The car gets the same blackened central grille flanked by sleek wraparound headlamps that are placed above the bumpers.
The car goes in line with company’s Man Maximum and Machine Minimum philosophy. In terms of dimensions, Honda Jazz measures 3955mm in length, 1694mm in width, 1544mm in height and gets the overall wheelbase of 2530mm. Honda Jazz is available in various colour schemes such as Carnelian Red pearl, Urban Titanium metallic, Sunset Orange, Taffeta White, Golden Brown Metallic, White Orchid Peal And Alabaster Silver Metallic.
On the inside, it’s the place where you can notice the majority of changes. As you step inside, you will be charmed by the airy cabin space. The changes include the new 7-inch touchscreen and Honda calls it as Digipad 2.0. The unit gets phone connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with navigation. The steering now gets cruise control besides phone as well as audio controls. Honda has now ditched the ‘jazz’ feature ‘magic seats’ and to a surprise it even doesn’t have 60:40 split seats either. Other features included are power steering, automatic climate control, height adjustable driver’s seat, tilt adjustable for steering, start/stop button, keyless entry, electrically folding ORVM, power window and paddle shift.
The new generation Honda Jazz comes with two engine options: 1.5L diesel and 1.2L petrol. The 1.5 L diesel engine is capable of generating the power output of 100PS and belts out the maximum torque of 200Nm. The diesel mill comes with 6-speed manual gearbox. It’s another 1.2L petrol mill can churn the power output of 90PS and generates the peak torque of 110Nm. The engine comes mated to either 5-speed manual or 7-step CVT with paddle shifters. In terms of fuel efficiency, 2018 diesel manual version returns the ARAI certified figures of 27.3kmpl while petrol manual returns 18.2kmpl of mileage. The petrol-CVT combo delivers 19kmpl of mileage figures.
Checking the safety aspects, Honda Jazz comes loaded with plethora of safety features and almost everything is standard in this car except reverse parking camera. The standard features include dual front SRS airbag, rear parking camera, ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, front fog lamps, driver seat reminder, day/night rear view mirror, key off reminder and rear windshield defogger.
Honda Jazz is available in total of three different variants they are S, V and VX. The price for the Honda Jazz starts from Rs. 7.4 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 9.34 lakh. Its base trim S is offered with the diesel engine option only which is tagged at Rs. 8.1 lakh. Honda Jazz V is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.4 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 8.9 lakh for the diesel trim. Its VX variant is tagged at Rs. 7.84 lakh and Rs. 9.34 lakh for petrol and diesel respectively. Honda Jazz CVT is available at the price tag of Rs. 9.04 lakh and Jazz Exclusive CVT is tagged at Rs. 9.23 lakh, ex-showroom. Honda Jazz 2018 competes against the rivals such as Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai Elite i20.

Step inside and you will find familiar environment as the car is quite identical to sibling City save a few details such as instrument cluster and storage spaces. The cabin is as flexible as the old one with the driver seat getting height adjustment functionality. Unlike the previous version, this time Honda has removed the magic seats in the Jazz. The feature was a practical option for many of the users as they get flipped individually, fold as well as could go completely flat to make massive space for storing luggage. This was the big USP of the earlier Jazz but the reason Honda removing this feature is not known.
However, the updated version gets several new features such as new push engine start/stop button and cruise control which were long demanded by the folks. The car also get new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which the carmaker call as Digipad 2.0. Powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the unit can be used for music as well as navigation, voice command and Bluetooth streaming. It also displays feeds from the rear parking camera.
The 354L of boot space is still massive and best in its class even giving tight noose competition to some of the compact sedans out there. The car still remain practical on several aspects, there is front centre armrest with storage and parcel shelf at the rear. Ingress and egress is absolutely comfortable especially for the elder ones in the family. The trunk lid is nice and flat which makes loading the luggage easy while the massive greenhouse offers an excellent view of the surroundings.
The seats in the car at both front and the rear are wide and comfortable while the black upholstery on the top of the range variant looks youthful. It would not get dirty easily as there is beige seat fabric given in the lower variants. The legroom is more than what one would expect in such a car and the same goes for headroom as well. The ergonomics are perfect in this car with everything falling into hands so easily. The leather-wrapped steering offers excellent grip and while there is rake adjustment for it, there is no option for reach adjustment.
The instrument cluster is also not too different from what we see in the City sedan. The dials in the instrument are clear and easy to read and you would love the way how graphical bar moves with a light foot. The unit also shows real-time fuel efficiency and also the ambient cluster lights glows green or blue according to the driving style i.e. blue if you are not drive sensibly and green if you are. The multi-information display also gives information on outside temperature display, cruising range, fuel consumption warning/distance to empty and shift position indicator. And like all the other Hondas out there, this one also illuminates during the day as well.
There are some new goodies in the list including one push start/stop button with white & red illumination and cruise control. Other comfort factors in the updated Jazz remain intact with features such as electrically adjustable/foldable ORVM, auto up/down driver window, front and rear power windows and automatic ac with touchscreen control panel. The rear ac vents is still missing in the car, a feature which is being offered in cars like Hyundai Santro. Also, a USB charging point is a big miss in a car with a price range of Rs. 7.44 - 9.41 lakh.

In terms of design and styling, the Jazz would polarise opinions. The previous Jazz had rounded and cleaner lines and exhibited a long lasting impression which the new Jazz might not match up with. However, on the other hand, the new Jazz is sportier than the version launched in 2009. The next-gen launched in 2015 has been wrapped around with the right cuts and creases on the right places in order to give it a more muscular look, even more than the car in the segment possesses. The new Jazz looks sharper than ever and compatible with the mass market tastes.
At the front, the car is wider than the earlier one and identical to the likes of the City sedan. The wide profile is highlighted by stretched out headlamps going into the glossy black plastic panel which also houses the logo. Further, a thin chrome lining running just below that panel gives the car a smiling look. And unlike the earlier Jazz, the foglights are now placed closer to the corners. The windshield still remains large XXL sized giving the driver absolute view of the road.
Though the Jazz does not share any exterior detail with the City sedan but the grille and headlamps seems like shared aims. Also, given the fact that Jazz shares a lot of parts with City, it wasn’t easy for the carmaker to price it competitively. However, being a sub-4 meter car it would get some benefits. The side profile features a strong beltline with the MPV-like silhouette. The 15-inch alloy wheels seem small given the size of the car. The electrically foldable outside rear view mirrors is a straight lift from City.
Many people would like the way crease with the waistline running across the length and all the way up to the taillights. This move also helps the car in shredding off the MPV image. The 2018 Jazz gets updated taillights which now features LED elements making the car look more appealing than before. These Volvo inspired taillights extends up to the rear spoiler giving a sportier look to the car. Overall, the Jazz sharing the underpinnings of City makes it an ambitious car, a prerequisite for a premium hatchback.

Mileage Running Cost

Honda Jazz follows the traits of City and comes with both the diesel and petrol engine options. The diesel powered Jazz is good for producing ARAI certified 27.3kms for a litre fuel, making it the most fuel efficient premium diesel hatchback, falling just behind the Maruti Baleno. However, the real world figures might be around 20kmpl in mix conditions.
On the other hand, the petrol powered Jazz can deliver 18.2kmpl while the CVT automatic petrol can return the mileage figures of 19kmpl. Again, the real world figures would be different, you can expect mileage close to 15kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The new generation Jazz sits on a highly improved suspension setup. The car offers excellent ride quality especially at slow and medium speeds while crashing into the potholes is no more a concern. The Japanese automaker looking at the Indian driving conditions has cleverly managed to straighten out the stiffness in the ride quality.
The powered steering is light, fuss-free and direct that makes the car perfect for city driving. The car is able to tackle corner with ease and remain composed till the grip limits of the tyres.

Engine Performance

Following the footsteps of Honda City and Amaze sedans, the Jazz gets both the petrol and diesel engine to choose from. The 1.2L i-DTEC diesel engine is a tried and tested one and good for making 100PS and 200Nm of max torque. The powertrain is notorious for making noise but a very fuel efficient one. The mid-range is strong and this is the area where Jazz shines making you curious enough to push forward. However, the 6-speed manual gearbox will encourage the driver to shift up a gear to keep the car at its best efficiency level.
The petrol engine is the1.2L i-VTEC unit which produces 90PS and 110Nm of max torque. The engine wants to be revved and comes with extended midrange that makes manoeuvring in the traffic easy without the need of downshift. The shift of the 5-speed manual transmission is slick while the clutch is light.
On the other hand, the CVT with the engine makes up for a great urban commuter. The driving from point A to point B is unparalleled and the engine and automatic gearbox combination improves the overall drivability of the car. Press the accelerator and the buzzy engine comes into action with the rubber band effect. Push it hard and the engine can revv up to max 6000rpm in the manual mode before CVT comes into action. So, its better to drive the CVT Jazz in a relaxed manner.
The car comes with paddle shifters but that doesn’t make it a sporty car, it is a marketing gimmick. However, 7-preset ratios does give a little bit of sporty performance especially when you want to overtake. And the gearbox responds to paddle shifters judiciously fast.

Braking Safety

The Honda Jazz comes equipped with standard front disc and drum brake setup at the rear. And the brakes perform as you would expect from such a car. The system helps the car comes to halt in a straight line without any fuss while applying brakes at high speeds. The folks driving the car will get used to the sharp bite it offers.
As per safety aspects, the new Honda Jazz uses Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACETM) Body Structure that helps redirect collision energy away from the passenger and minimizing damage. Almost everything is standard in this car except reverse parking camera with guidelines.
The car continues to offer dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, speed sensing auto door lock, driver seatbelt reminder, day/night inside rear view mirror, rear windshield defogger and engine immobilizer.
