Crossover alternatives of hatchbacks have been in the auto space for quite some time now. This is one of its kind formulas that every carmaker has been trying its hands on. Pick up a regular hatchback, add a dose of aggression with revised bumpers, body cladding, roof rails, raised ground clearance and sporty changes inside, and voila! you end up creating a brand new car. After Volkswagen and Toyota, Hyundai also tried this formula and so far it has been successful in creating frenzy among the enthusiasts. Called as i20 Active, the cosmetically enhanced crossover version of Elite i20 was launched back in 2015 and was instantly welcomed by the aficionados. The 2018 version comes with a lot of aesthetic and interior changes to cash in further. The engine options in the car remains the same.
Going by the looks, it seems that the Korean automaker has well understood this game. And since the car has been gathering overwhelming response across the country, there was no need to give extreme changes to the car. So, the carmaker did the same as the new i20 Active gets only new dual-paint colour schemes and nothing else. The car retains the same face as before with the sporty hexagonal grille with dynamic bi-function projector headlamps incorporating stylish looking LED positioning lights as well as LED daytime running lights. The robust character comes in the form of aggressive bumper and front and rear skid plates. The prominent fog lamps further enhances the appeal at the front.
Turn around and you will find the sporty traits in the form of bespoke 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and increased ride height adding a touch of dynamism. At the rear, the dual-tone bumpers, tailgate spoiler and uniquely designed tail lamps gives the car an ‘Active’ look. Further, new addition in the 2018 model include rear garnish with active branding while the shark fin antenna lifts up the appeal overall appeal at the back. Dimensionally, the car remains the same measuring 3,995mm in length, 1,760mm in width, 1,555mm in height and the wheelbase of 2,570mm. The ground clearance of the car remains intact at 190mm. The new i20 Active is available in new Marina Blue with White Roof colour option besides the earlier ones namely Earth Brown with Black Roof, Typhoon Silver, Earth Brown, Polar White, Fiery Red and Polar White with Black Roof.
Talking about the interiors, the car carries the features of the newly launched Elite i20 with new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and revised seat fabric pattern. There are also changes at the centre console buttons while the cabin remain all-black except the Blue inserts across the cabin if you choose the Blue and White exterior colour. The infotainment comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink connectivity options with the decibels powered by Arkamys sound system. There are usual Aux, Bluetooth and USB option as well as steering mounted audio controls that synchronizes with the infotainment.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the features remain intact including push engine start/stop button, automatic climate control, glovebox cooling, rear AC vents, tilt and telescopic steering, power outlet, USB charger and electrically adjustable/foldable ORVMs. The interior comes with combination colour package which include Brown, Satin red and Alps blue. The multi-information display with blue interior illumination shows a lot of vital vehicle information. There is enough headroom and legroom for three passengers at the back.
As far as safety is concerned, Hyundai has bestowed the car with driver and co-passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, speed sensing and impact sensing auto door lock, headlamp escort function and seatbelt with pre-tensioners as standard features. The top variants also get side and curtain airbags, ISOFIX child mount anchorage, rear defogger with timer, rear view camera with display on AVN, reverse parking sensors, front fog lamps and automatic headlamps.
The car continues to source its power from the same set of petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.2L Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine which produces 83PS and 114Nm of max torque, mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, the diesel one is the 1.4L U2 CRDi unit that pumps out 90PS and 220Nm of max torque, paired to 6-speed manual transmission. The fuel efficiency of the car is also pretty good with the diesel engine making 21.19kms out of a litre of fuel, the petrol one returns 17.19kmpl.
On the pricing front, the new Hyundai i20 Active starts at Rs. 7.71 lakhs while the top of the range diesel model is priced at Rs. 9.91 lakh, ex-showroom. Hyundai i20 Active lock horns with the likes of Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Honda WR-V and Tata Nexon in the segment.
The cabin of new i20 Active is welcoming. The dual-tone interior greets you the moment you step in. The driver can hop on to the desired driving position fairly easy with features like height adjustable seat and steering that comes with tilt and telescopic functionality. The interior of the car is outstanding with quality fit and finish. And this you will realize the moment you sit inside.
The steering wheel wrapped in leather offers a good grip while the seat fabrics are wide and comes with sufficient cushioning to snug you in. Further, the 3-spoke steering wheel features controls for the telephony and music as well as controls for multi-information display and gives a premium feel. The MID display in the middle along with two large dials at either end gives relevant vehicle information including temperature and fuel readouts, wheel direction turn indicator, reverse parking, average speed, digital speedometer, time and service interval. Distance-to-empty counter and fuel-efficiency information is missing. The instrument remains illuminated during the day as well.
Coming to the central console, there you will find Elite i20 sourced 7-inch touchscreen infotainment. The unit is compatible with latest techs such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink. The infotainment comes with host of other connectivity options including Hyundai iblue Smartphone App for Audio Remote Control, Navigation, USB, Bluetooth, Aux-In as well as doubles up for displaying feeds for the reverse parking camera. The decibels are powered by Arkamys sound system with 4-speakers and 4-tweeters, one of the best in the segment. The quality of buttons is good offering tactile feel.
Coming to the gear knob, it’s chunky and gives a nice grip. The gears nicely slither into the slots leaving only a little chance of miss-shift. The car is very practical when it comes to storage space and utilities. It offers sunglass holder, space ahead of the gear lever, cup holders, front and rear door map pockets, front passenger rear seat map pockets, rear parcel tray as well as space under the front armrest. The car also offers glovebox cooling, power outlet and USB charger.
Coming to comfort, the rear seat of the vehicle is wide and offer enough cushioning and under-thigh support. So, three passengers sitting for long journeys won’t be a problem. The legroom and kneeroom is also ample with a full-sized adult can be occupied without creating problem for fellow passengers. The rear AC vents and the adjustable headrests make sure you are feeling comfortable all throughout the journey.
The car comes with three different interior colour patterns including Brown, Satin Red and Alps Blue. The aluminium pedals add a touch of sportiness inside. Other comfort features that makes this car a tempting buy include fully automatic air conditioner with cluster ionizer, rear wiper and washer, clutch footrest, theatre dimming central room lamp and electrically adjustable/foldable outside rear-view mirrors and push start/stop button. Overall, Hyundai has nicely packaged this car keeping the youth in mind.
Everyone knows what we can expect while reading about a crossover. There will be side body cladding, raises suspension and skid plates, and Hyundai i20 Active is no exception to this. Starting with the changes in the latest version, the car gets additional paint jobs along with subtle changes to radiator grille, silver finishing on the fog lamps and black rubber strip on the boot-lid. Rest, all the elements remains the same. At the front, the hexagonal grille gels well with the big silver skid plate which also features a small honeycomb grille in the middle.
Talking about the muscular looks, the carmaker has given big rounded fog lamps to make them look purposeful not just fancy aesthetic item. The biggest difference you will see between the hatchback and this crossover version is the headlights. The angular headlamps are not only a treat to eyes but also features projectors as well as come with integrated cornering lamps. How’s it possible a crossover not having LED DRLs? Hyundai has taken care of this aspect too.
Coming to the side profile, the body cladding continues to run across the length while the door cladding adds to the solid looks. The silver roof rails is one of the elements that differentiates this car from the standard hatchback. You get the same 3-step LED tail lights which really look brilliant boasting of the German design (i20 was styled by Hyundai’s European design centre). The design is further balanced in the form of pleasant tailgate spoiler and skid plate completing the rear looks. Overall, i20 Active is a sure head turner.
The car despite all that added aggressiveness to the body and extra weight, remain as frugal as standard i20 when it comes to fuel consumption. The i20 Active makes ARAI certified mileage of 21.19kmpl while the petrol one isn’t that bad with 17kmpl. The real world figures might be different but it would be still easy on pockets.
People who are acquainted with the Elite i20 will instantly notice that this car has a stiffer suspension. With raised ground clearance, the i20 Active has been bestowed with stiffer springs to handle the body movement. This works absolutely fantastic as the setup is just right. While moving at high speeds, the car remains under control and there is minor body roll while taking sharp turns. The vehicle does not lose serenity while gliding over potholes and bumps, however, they can be noticed inside the cabin.
If you have earlier driven the i20, you will find this car a bit more engaging to drive. In a nutshell, the suspension system appears to be focused more on keeping the vehicle stable rather offering absolute comfort. This is an ideal setup for people who drive more in urban scenarios.
Coming to the steering wheel, it is light for city driving but leaves you wanting for that response when you gain speed. In the urban driving conditions, the lightness of the steering let you quickly and easily take u-turn without causing you to break a sweat. Even if you are on highways, the car never let you feel unsafe, however, the feedback could have been better.
The 2018 version remain intact on the mechanical front. The new i20 Active continues to house the 1.2L Kappa 4-cylindder VTVT petrol engine that makes 83PS and 114Nm of torque, paired to 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel one on the other hand, is the 1.4L U2 CRDi unit that produces 90PS and 220Nm of max torque, married to 6-speed manual transmission. Still there isn’t any automatic option after 4 years of its launch.
The i20 Active besides being on a heavier side is that it runs a short final drive as compared to Elite i20. As per Hyundai, the idea behind this was to make this car feel a bit livelier and offer sporty feel to the young buyers of the country. The company also claims that it has recorded a handsome 11 percent improvement in the acceleration in the diesel version and 6 percent with the petro engine, as compared to the Elite i20.
The diesel motor is a pleasure to drive as it packs sufficient grunt to quickly add thrust. The car works smoothly on the open stretches. There is enough torque of 220Nm which is available right from 1500rpm and there is strong outpour that can be experienced when you release the clutch in the first gear. Talking about the clutch, it is slightly weightier and can cause fatigue in stop-go city traffic for long. And when you choose to get going, there will be a gradual surge of turbo and the power delivery becomes strong and linear. The powertrain revs strongly till it reaches the 4,300rpm while shifting swiftly will not be an issue.
The engine produces 90PS of power at 4,000rpm and even on the thoroughfares the car does not feel underpowered or like its struggling to gain speed. On high speeds, the cabin keep off the engine, road and wind noise.
The petrol engine on the other hand, is incredibly smooth and the rpm needle is the only noticeable indication that the motor is live and running. The powertrain does most of the job in the cities and unlike the diesel one, this one won’t create any problems for sedate drivers or A to B commuters and cause fatigue. One of the reasons behind this is the short gear ratios. And even the low-end torque seems to be a tad improved than the earlier generation of i20, it is quite easy to arcade while kicking off.
The power delivery in this engine is quite satisfactory till you reach 100kmph and that too with low passenger load. The engine sounds absolutely good between the 3000rpm and 5000rpm. But on the contrary, the engine sound pierces into the cabin as early as 2500rpm which could be irritating for many. The travel range of the clutch is also longer like its diesel counterpart, however, the 5-speed transmission is suave with manageable throws.
But take this car on the highway and you will start witnessing the weak elements of the petrol engine. Putting it under any stressful conditions for instance, quick passing and you will be disappointed by the result. The engine will also struggle when climbing up on inclined road with full load of passenger. The rivals such as Swift and Jazz rather feel lively on highways. So, if you are driving the petrol powered Active, the ideal way is to get adapt to easy driving style on the open roads. The petrol engine is not as impressive as the diesel one and feels underpowered for a premium crossover of this stature. In short, the petrol engine is not for enthusiasts for sure but rather good for regular commuting.
The braking power of the car slightly lack in progression but more than enough to quickly halt the car and instil confidence when put under emergency braking situations. The addition of ABS allows the driver to push the pedal hard without the worry of skidding. Further, the car is equipped with standard features such as EBD, dual front airbags, speed and impact sensing auto door lock, seatbelt with pre-tensioners and headlamp escort function.
Other features included in the top variants include side and curtain airbags, rear defogger with timer, ISOFIX child mount anchorage, reverse parking sensors, rear view camera with display on AVN, automatic headlamps and front fog lamps.

Everything is fine accept the Spare parts and sorely going to change the car and the resell value is very poor the company should take care specially with the necessities of the customer and no one could recommend the car for buying this one.It is too hard to follow this but not efficient for long drive users

I have purchased in Mar 2017 new Asta O petrol & it's very good car is too much better then swift and baleno. its look is very attractive in this price there is no one car for compare with it accept Honda Jazz. I was panning to buy Verna , but than active came in and i now iam going for it . I loved the overall practicality of the car , its use in the city , parking etc . The car is different in all aspects and gets attention . I think not much of the people will go for this
I have test driven the i20 Active petrol model yesterday and agree with most of the aspects talked about on this website. However, I wanted more information on the petrol version as my usage is very less. I agree the Diesel version has good performance but the petrol version lacks for a car that costs 8 lakh rupees. I was on a family vacation in Goa when I saw the i20 Active being photographed by media. The car looks excellent in real and I had a chance to see it from close. My family liked the design also. I didnt sit inside but the interior doesnt look good in the blue colour scheme. I hope we can also
