Hyundai launched the Santro in 1998 in India and in a matter of few years it became a household name. This is the car which started it all for the Korean auto giant in the huge Indian auto space. Some of the reasons were its attractive looks, many first in class features, and the peppy engine which offered easy drivability in city traffic. The carmaker gave a major facelift in 2003 with the name Hyundai Xing. Now after a brief sabbatical, once again Hyundai has come up with the right formula for a budget city car but this time with a lot of extras for the first-time buyers. The Korean automaker has launched the much awaited 2nd generation Santro which promises a lot much like the original one. The car not only looks more striking than the original one but well-loaded with features and most interestingly, a more powerful engine underneath and that too with AMT gearbox.
Talking about the exteriors, the new Santro shows traits of different cars from the family, be it current or past line-ups. But it is nice to see that everything has been combined so beautifully to create a unique looking face. The main highlights at the front include large cascade grille and the sweptback headlamps which appear to be the extended versions of the discontinued i10. Then there is a set of fog lamps set high and integrated in the grille structure. The creases on the bonnet have been given to add some muscularity to the overall design.
Coming to the side profile, the tall boy character is not as apparent as it was in the earlier version, as the length and width have been increased. The creases above the wheel arches and the curve on the rear window cleverly hide the tallboy design and give it an edgy look. The more expensive variants will get ORVM integrated turn indicators and 14-inch wheels with full wheel cover. The rear profile is simple and is instead can be termed as ‘wide boy’ giving hints of Datsun redi-GO and Grand i10. The shoulder line dips down to the rear window leading all the way to the simple and small tail lamps. The carmaker has given segment first rear camera which can be seen just below Hyundai badge.
Dimensionally, the car is now 45mm longer (3610mm), 120mm wider (1645mm) and 20mm increase (2400mm) in the wheelbase as well. The new Santro is available in 7 graceful colour options including Polar White, Typhoon Silver, Stardust (dark grey), Marina Blue, Imperial Beige, Fiery Red, and Diana Green.
Though the interiors have been drastically changed, one would find some similarity especially if you happen to sit in the cabin of Grand i10. The car adorns a dual black and beige interior theme with the Diana Green coloured Santro gets exclusive all-black interior with contrasting green inserts. The prime highlight at the central console is the first in class 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as MirrorLink smartphone connectivity. There is Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity as well. Then there is brand new three-pod instrument cluster featuring two analogue dials giving info on vehicle speed and the engine rpm and the third one housing digital information display.
The steering with mounted controls seems to have been carried away from Grand i10. The ac vents seem to have taken inspiration from Mercedes Benz while the segment first rear ac vents is something that would tempt the first time buyers. This time, the power window buttons have been placed at the lower end of the center console, just below the gear stick. Other comfort and convenient elements in the car include electrically foldable ORVM, rear washer and wiper, remote fuel lid and tail gate open, swacch can and rear parcel tray. The boot space of 235L is enough to carry the weekend luggage.
In terms of safety, the carmaker offers driver side airbag and ABS with EBD as standard across the variants. The top of the line variant also gets passenger airbag, rear parking camera with sensors, speed sensing auto door lock, impact sensing auto door lock and front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiter. Other safety aspects in the car include front fog lamps, central locking, child safety door locks and fire extinguisher available in the CNG variants only.
As far as engine and performance is concerned, the new Hyundai Santro uses the same 1.1L engine of the earlier version but comes with different state of tune. The engine makes 69PS and 99Nm of max torque, mated to 5-speed manual transmission. The Korean auto giant did not want to comprise comfort in the new car as it has given AMT option to make it stand shoulder to shoulder with the competition. The CNG variants on the other hand produce 59PS and 84Nm of max torque. In terms of fuel economy, where the petrol powered Santro returns 20.3kmpl, the CNG variants deliver 30.48km/kg.
The pricing seems to be in line with what Hyundai was offering with the i10 hatchback. The new Santro price starts at Rs. 3.9 lakh and goes upto Rs. 5.65 lakh. The new Santro will be competing against Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Tata Tiago in the segment. The new Santro looks practical, is well equipped and affordable which makes it a complete Indian family car.


The cabin without any doubt is nice and welcoming. The very first thing one would notice in the new Santro’s cabin is how open and airy it feels. Though the lower variants have been given the tried and tested beige and black treatment which looks good, one can also opt for Sporty Black Interiors with contrasting green inserts across AC vents, centre console, gear lever and even on seatbelts. But unfortunately these are only available with the new Diana exterior colour. In terms of material, the quality of plastic is smooth, the center console finished in matte looks refined, fabric seat upholstery feels nice and even you will have a great experience in touching and operating the switchgear. In simple words, the quality inside go well above the price of the car and it’s nothing like cost cutting in terms of fit and finish.
Moving to the layout, it is also no less than interesting. For instance, the controls for the front power windows have been placed just behind the gear stick instead of conventionally placing them on the doors. This practically free up a lot of width in the cabin, however, the front occupants would still be getting the door armrests. Further, the central fascia inspired by elephant features normal air cons while the ones placed on either sides of the dashboard have taken inspiration from Mercedes Benz featuring rotors which appears to be like jet turbines.
The practically of the cabin can be further seen in the fact that the car gets proper slot in the central console for placing those trinkets, glovebox incorporating an open storage slot inside and well-sized door pockets capable of holding 1-litre bottle each both at the front and the rear. The passengers will also get a USB port above the gear stick as well as a 12V power socket. The gem of the central console has to be the new first in class 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit powered by Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink as well as voice recognition support. The functionality of the unit is surprisingly slick with impressive resolution and what’s more appealing is the rubberized strip of the shortcut controls at base of the display.
Another favorable aspect in the car this time around is the amount of space provided in the cabin. It feels very airy and there is adequate space even for a six-footer one behind the other. Siting on the driver seat gives you a good view of the road but unfortunately the seat isn’t height adjustable. However, the default seat height is tall enough for short stint in the cities without any issues in usability. The legroom and headroom at the rear is also good, even a person with 6.5 feet tall can sit at the rear sparing an inch of headroom to the roof. So, the tallboy traits are there.
Further, the seatback angle is also set in such a manner to give relaxing experiencing without hindering the view ahead. However, much like what is being offered at the front, the rear headrests aren’t adjustable which will be practically unusable for the taller passengers who are 6 feet and above.
Coming more to the features, there isn’t tilt-steering functionality. The instrument cluster is fresh and nicely finished. The three-pod cluster features speedo in the center and flanked by tachometer and multi-info display at both the end. The speedometer houses chequered print along with grey plaque design which adds a nice touch to the overall looks. Overall, the new Santro is definitely a perfect pick for those who are looking for a bold and thrilling vehicle.


Seeing the new Santro for the first time would be a mixed bag experience but overall the car looks nice in flesh. Looking at the front fascia, it appears that Hyundai has mixed elements from Grand i10 and the discontinued i10. The car features a design that is very well in line with company’s design language while the smiling grille has been set quite lower than the usual bonnet shut line. And this peculiarity can be seen in the placement of the fog lamps which is quite high falling just below the headlamps. The headlights are sweptback and mounted high up with the badge also moving atop as against what Hyundai conventionally use to place it. There are creases on the bonnet that does add some muscularity to the overall front profile.
Coming to the sides, it would be really hard to difficult to distinguish the new Hyundai Santro from the i10 of yesteryears. The loss of that tallboy stance might be due to low height while the good thing is that the car is just 15mm narrower than the bigger sibling Grand i10. So, one can say it’s rightly fits in between Eon and Grand i10. However, the side profile incorporates some interesting bits including a sharp boomerang lines above the wheel arches which provides some character to the car. This is definitely opposed to the conventional clean panels of Hyundai cars. Though the carmaker doesn’t offer alloy wheels, the 14-inch wheels with full wheel cover looks apt.
Move to the rear profile and you will see that this car appears understated but yet shows flamboyancy from various angles. It seems that the carmaker has combined the elements of Maruti A-Star and Grand i10. There are small squared-off tail lamps, large black inserts and reflectors in the bumper and large metal panel. The carmaker has given first in class rear camera that nicely protrudes from below the Hyundai badge. Then there are rear wash and wiper and two parking sensors which really make the vehicle look upmarket. However, instead of fitting the inexpensive flip type door handles, the company should have considered the push-pull setup, which even the Celerio offers.
Overall, the car looks good and has a fair of uniqueness to its profile. To sum up in a few words, one can say that it serves as perfect filler between the Eon and Grand i10.

Mileage Running Cost

Though the engine in the new Santro is the same, the carmaker has done various tweaks for enhancing the fuel efficiency. The company claims that both the manual and automatic petrol variants are able to deliver the fuel economy of 20.3kmpl. For the mileage hungry folks, there is also CNG variant which can return 30.48 km/kg.

Comfort Suspension

One of the talking points of the new Santro is the considerably improved ride quality with the improved suspension setup. Don’t get surprised as the car takes the uneven roads, speed breakers and absorb bumps competently and maturely. The tyres provide reasonable grip and you can actually feel how fair amount of grip you have while chucking at the corners. This also comes on the backdrop of the steering wheel which is solid at high speeds and light while commuting in cities.
The feedback from the steering isn’t bristling but the driver is always aware of the happenings ahead at the front. The turning radius of the car is tight and while you maneuver in cities, you will need less effort.

Engine Performance

The old 1.1L Epsilon engine which was doing its duty in Santro Zing is back, however with more power underneath. The motor makes 69PS and 99Nm, which is 7PS more and 3Nm more than the older one. The engine uses a 5-speed manual gearbox to transfer the power to the front wheels. Start the engine and the 4-cylinder motor settles down smoothly to idle state. Though it isn’t as quite as Kappa family of engines, it is definitely better than the competition.
Driving the car in cities, one will find the clutch and swift shifting gearbox easy. The engine remains calm but if you really want a change in pace, you need to put some effort in the gearbox. However, unlike the torquey nature of most other urban-focused commuters, the new Santro doesn’t give that extra amount of torque at low revs and instead pulls cleanly through the rev range. The credit to the peaceful and unruffled driving experience also goes to the tall gear ratios as the car has the ability to go 50kmph in the 1st gear itself.
The Santro not only feels undisturbed at 80kmph but can cover long distances without breaking the sweat. The AMT is company’s first in-house piece of work and it seems to be a brilliant first-time approach. The big pauses which are the basic flaw of AMTs, have been improved. However, if we compare it to traditional automatics, the AMT still lack swiftness in shifting, especially when switching between the first and second gear. But the Tiptronic mode in the gearbox set-up can help remove those strains of shifting.

Braking Safety

The disc brakes at the front possess a strong bite force. And the best part is that the braking capability has been further bolstered with the addition of ABS with EBD as part of the standard package. The carmaker has upped the ante in the safety department as well. The car now comes with standard drive side airbags and child safety door locks.
Other variants include aspects such as central locking, front fog lamps, day and night rearview mirror, rear fog lamps, keyless entry, rear parking camera with sensors, speed sensing auto door lock, impact sensing auto door unlock and front seatbelt pretensioners with loaded limiter. The CNG variants get fire extinguisher as additional safety equipment.
