Mahindra XUV500 is the company’s flagship car which has recently got another facelift in its lifespan of seven years. The game changer SUV was introduced back in the year 2011 and took the market by storm because of its sheer value for money quotient. The car received some of the cosmetic as well as mechanical updates in the year 2015. Over the past few years, the SUV has managed to gather a lot of praises and remained popular among the enthusiasts due to its bold and appealing looks and expansive feature list. In the mid-life update, the car received further increase in features and engines were more powerful than before. This time around, the company has given some handsome makeover in every department, be it styling, premiumness, features or additional power under the hood.
On the outside, Mahindra XUV500 gets the new front façade with refreshed radiator grille along with mesh motif decorated with chrome accents. Headlights have been worked upon with LRD DRLs now placed on top. Fog lamps surround gets minor tweak but retains the same old school looks. At the rear part, tail lights are triangular with LED signature lighting while tailgate has received a complete renovation. Tailgate spoiler gets newly incorporated stoplight. The SUV is available in 7 graceful colours they are Crimson Red, Mystic Copper which are new, while others colours include Pearl White, Lake-Side Brown, Opulent Purple, Moondust Silver and Volcano Black.
The interiors of Mahindra XUV500 are equally stylish and well-furnished. The vehicle is a seven-seater SUV and with the amazing 2700mm of wheelbase, it makes for a spacious cabin and very comfortable seating. The upholstery is quite nice and the all-black dashboard design is pretty conventional along with large air-con vents and twin-pod instrument cluster. The 7-inch infotainment unit remains the same but it can be paired with Mahindra’s Blue Sense App that allows the user to control climate, check tyre pressure and volume and audio source. Other features are carried forward from the older variant such as 6-way adjustable driver seat, electric sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, push start/stop button and passive keyless entry.
For providing safety to passengers, Mahindra XUV500 is loaded with a long list of safety features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, Engine immobilizer, Child Safety Lock, Hill Assist, Automatic Headlamps, Turn indicators on ORVMs, traction control, rain sensing wipers and central locking.
Mahindra XUV500 features the more powerful version of the existing 2.2L diesel powertrain that is capable of producing power output of 155PS and the peak torque of 360Nm. It’s 2.2L petrol engine is carried forward and can belt out 140PS and yields the peak torque of 330Nm. The engines continue to offer the same automatic and 6-speed manual transmission.
Mahindra XUV500 is currently available in 6 different variants to choose from; the W5, W7, W9, W11, W11 (O) and G AT. Where the base model W5 is priced at Rs. 12.38 lakh, the top ranging model W11 with AT AWD is tagged as Rs. 19.05 lakh. Mahindra XUV500’s top-selling model W11 is priced at Rs. 16.49 lakh, all prices ex-showroom, Delhi.

Inside, Mahindra has done few major changes to increase the upmarket quotient and that comes from the all-black theme with new quilted tan-leather seat upholstery. The upper part of the dashboard now dons black leather with fine stitch lines while the rest remains black plastic. The buttons and controls of center console including infotainment and aircon get a new black finishing with brushed silver highlights.
The 7-inch infotainment system is the same but the audio experience has been tweaked by Arkamys and the tweeters also find a new location. The infotainment can be connected to Mahindra’s Blue sense app that supports Android as well as iOS, allowing you access to your favorite apps without having to peek into your smartphone. This update also added smartwatch connectivity with compatible smartwatches. This allows you to control temperature, audio sources and a number of vehicle info including fuel level and tyre pressure wirelessly. Besides, the Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in and GPS navigation capability remains the integral part of the system.
Mahindra XUV500 comes loaded with features such as 6-way adjustable driver seat, sporty twin-pod instrument cluster, illuminated scuff plates, icy-blue lounge lighting and cool box. Other premium features in the car remain intact such as passive keyless entry, push-button start, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, smart rain sensing wipers, electric sunroof, automatic temperature control, reverse parking camera and light sensing headlamps among others.

The front façade shows the most obvious change on the outside. The redesigned grille incorporates chrome inserts surrounded by gloss black sides and bordered by thick chrome. The headlights have been re-profiled with the LED DRLs finding its place on the top of the headlamp cluster. The chrome in fog lamp housing has also been reshaped.
Turn around a bit and there you will find a new chrome strip on the bottom of the door sills and new 18-inch dual toned alloy wheels. There is chrome strip on the new roof rail and the door sills, but they can be hardly noticeable. The rear profile gets the biggest change with revamped tail lamps, revised tailgate with chrome applique and the new aerodynamic roof spoiler, all that makes the car looks sleeker and tamed from the back.

Mileage Running Cost

Despite the humongous size, both the petrol and diesel motors are capable of delivering decent fuel economy of 16kmpl, certified by ARAI. Thanks to the micro-hybrid technology in these engines, enhanced for returning good mileage.

Comfort Suspension

The car continues to sport nice city driving characteristics. This comes from the structured monocoque platform that provides comfortable driving with minute body roll at the corners. Given its size, the car is agile in driving smothering road imperfections with ease.

Engine Performance

The new XUV500 is powered by the same set of engines but the diesel one gets a slight power bump. The 2.2L mHawk diesel engine with new geometry turbocharger now produces 155PS and 360Nm of torque, an increase of 15PS and 30Nm of torque from the previous engine.
The petrol engine continues to be the same 2.2L engine that pumps out 140bhp and 320Nm of max torque. Both the engines are mated to 6-speed synchromesh automatic transmission, while the diesel one also gets manual transmission option. In terms of performance, the initial response in the automatic driven diesel variant has been improved.

Braking Safety

Mahindra XUV500 gets brake energy regeneration with disc brakes fitted across the variants. The car’s stopping power is outright and significantly sharper. The safety quotient is further enhanced by ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, electronic stability program (ESP) with rollover mitigation, hill hold and hill descent control.

    Best in class SUV

Mahindra XUV500 offers very good bang for buck. Rest of the Mahindra models do have some small quality niggles here and there but the build quality, fit and finish of XUV is the best from the house of Mahindra. In terms of off-roading capablities, it is not an all out off-roader but it can still surprise you with its potential. Read More
