Overview

Mahindra Xylo is considered as one of the most affordable people’s mover. Xylo when first introduced in the subcontinent had to face big rivals like Innova and Ertiga. But the vehicle managed to gain a decent space due to its fair list of features and powerful engine. Mahindra Xylo provides a decent mix of features, comfort and practicality. Like other Mahindra cars, that are solid and made for the rough Indian roads, Mahindra Xylo is also a good urban commuter. The vehicle is the perfect value for money offering that provides comfort as well as space to big Indian families. Mahindra Xylo received its first facelift in 2012 followed by an update in the year 2014. The refreshed version comes with both cosmetic as well as mechanical changes.
Talking about the exteriors, Mahindra Xylo gets updated chrome highlights on the radiator grille with vinyl decals on the sides. Other than these changes the things remains the same outside. It carries the same aggressive curved grille along with chrome slats and sneering headlamps. Top of the line model gets integrated fog lamps and coloured bumper. The muscular looks of the Mahindra Xylo gives the car a strong road presence. At the back, its rear view mirrors along with wrap-around tail lamps add to its overall appeal. Checking on the dimensions, Mahindra Xylo is 4520mm long, 1880mm high and has the width of 1850mmm while its wheel base stands at 2760mm. Mahindra Xylo is available in vibrant shades such as Dolphin Grey, Java Brown, Diamond White, Fiery Black, Molten Red and Mist Silver.
In Mahindra Xylo, the cabin is the place that gets most number of changes. The car gets the new black and beige dashboard treatment along with the new faux wood grey inserts. It also now features new three-dial instrumentation cluster, third row getting 60:40 split function while the seats are covered with premium upholstery. Mahindra Xylo is the most spacious MUV till date, it offers enough legroom and headroom for all the passengers to sit comfortably. Being an MUV does not mean that the car compromises on the comfort factor. The vehicle features armrest for driver and co-driver, lumbar support for captain seats, HVAC system, 2-Din music system along with Bluetooth, cruise control, tilt steering, height adjustable driver seat, and steering mounted audio controls.
Under the hood, Mahindra Xylo comes with the choice of two diesel engine options one is the 2.2L mill and another one is 2.5L engine. The 2.2L mHawk engine is capable of generating the power output of 120PS and producing the maximum torque of 280Nm while the 2.5L mDi CRDe oil burner churns the power output of 95PS and the maximum torque of 218Nm. Both the mills come mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra has tuned the suspension as well for better ride and handling. In terms of fuel efficiency, 2.5L mill gives ARAI certified mileage of 14.95kmpl while the 2.2L powertrain delivers 14.02kmpl of fuel efficiency.
Safety of passengers has also been taken care of. The Mahindra Xylo comes equipped with various safety aspects including dual airbags, Anti-lock braking system, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, rear wiper, intellipark reverse assist, central locking, child safety lock, engine immobilizer and head beam adjuster.
Coming to the price and variants, Mahindra Xylo is offered in four different trims such as D2, D4, H4 and H8. Its new introduced top of the line variant is H9. As per the pricing details, the base trim Xylo D2 Maxx BSIV is tagged at Rs. 9.17 lakh, Xylo D2 is available at the price tag of Rs. 9.54 lakh. The top selling variant D4 is offered at the price tag of Rs. 10 lakh while H4 is tagged at Rs. 10.24 lakh. H4 ABS is priced at Rs. 10.48 lakh while its top trim H8 ABS with airbags is tagged at Rs. 12.0 lakh, ex-showroom. Mahindra Xylo competes against the rivals such as Honda Mobilio, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Renault Lodgy in the MUV segment of vehicles.

Interior

The craving for beige interiors have grown over the years and the buyers in India are especially inclined towards it. Though the Xylo had already beige interior featuring wood-like inlay on the dashboard as well as on the centre console, the latest version has been updated to enrich the quality further. The generic brown draped plastic panels in the cabin of the earlier version have now been updated with black colour. This enhancement has certainly upped the interior quality as well as minimized the clutter inside. It looks more contemporary than ever before. The car also gets new perforated seat fabric which increases the overall appeal of the car. The top variant gets leather interiors.
The unique selling point of this vehicle is always been its spaciousness and the same continues in the latest model as well. The carmaker has done a number of changes in this respect. The third row of the car now gets 60:40 split functionality which practically enhances the boot space. On the driver front, there is now height adjustable option so that he can find the perfect driving position. The car comes with variety of seating configurations to choose from. The middle row of the top of the range H8 and H9 variants now comes equipped with captain seats. Moreover, the first and second row also feature a pair of flip down arm rests for additional comfort.
For quite some time, Mahindra have been working hard to give the buyers a technologically equipped vehicle and Xylo has been part of this development process. The MUV has been bestowed with plethora of equipment. The recent addition in this respect has been cruise control and revamped instrument cluster. Other than these, the features remain the same including Bluetooth equipped infotainment unit, follow-me-headlamps, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and AC), tilt and power steering, remote fuel lid functionality, and driver seat storage tray among others.

Exterior

Mahindra has been keeping this vehicle updated over the years to keep in-line with the contemporaries. In terms of styling, the car has seen drastic transformation from that ugly looks of 2009 to the aggressive and mature looks in the latest version. Though the new version basically remains unchanged from the 2012 model, there are subtle changes across the exteriors. At the front, the new chrome lining on the bonnet, just above the badge clearly shows that the car needs to be taken seriously. This perfectly gels with the creases on the bonnet enhancing the visual prominence of the car.
The sneering headlights and the curved grille remains the same while the fog lamps are located on either side of the airdam. The new Xylo features unique decals on both the sides running across the length of the car. The flared wheel arches are filled with 5-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels adding a bit of aggressiveness to the side profile.
The chrome treatment which has been given to the front profile also finds its place at the rear, but here it’s located below the Mahindra badge and just above the number plate. The rear is as simple as it was before with the vertically stacked tail lamps flanking the tailgate on both the sides. So, even though Xylo is not a prettiest looking car, it does catch a number of eyeballs required from a car of this class.

Mileage Running Cost

Mahindra has tried to keep the fuel efficiency numbers under acceptable limits looking at the size of the MUV. The 2.5L variants of Mahindra Xylo delivers ARAI certified mileage of 14.95kmpl while the 2.2L variant returns 14.02kmpl. But the real world mileage would be around 10-12kmpl which is pretty good looking at stature of the vehicle.

Comfort Suspension

Mahindra has tweaked the suspension setup to bolster the ride quality. The vehicle gets firmer scrubs in the suspension and a pair of updated shock absorbers, all which makes it a more composed vehicle as far as handling dynamics is concerned. But this is not the biggest change in terms of suspension construction. The latest version of Xylo now features rear axle stabilizer bar that was not there in the earlier model. This radically reduced the disobedience which the Xylo was known for while simultaneously reducing rolling and pitching by introducing stiffer coil springs.
The new control arms and solid anti-roll bar are targeted at making the car more responsive at corners and to control body roll. The overall suspension setup absorb the road torture quite fairly while the steering is pretty light.

Engine Performance

The Mahindra Xylo is being targeted at different set of buyers so the engine options are offered accordingly. The low end variants are powered by 2.5L mDi CRDe diesel engine that produces 94PS and 218Nm of torque. This of course is not so powerful engine so these variants would be owned by fleet operators who want to carry 7-8 passengers with huge luggage at fair comfort meant for longer journeys. The higher variants which were powered by 2.5L mEagle engine have been replaced by 2.2L CRDe engine carried from Scorpio bulging out 120PS and 280Nm of torque.
The transmission duties are handled by 5-speed gearbox shared from Scorpio which is much better to drive. Once the engine is started, you will feel that despite being the diesel engine, it is quite silent and accelerates smoothly without showing any signs of lack of power. The car is good to drive in the cities and highways and that’s what an MUV buyer would want from such a car.

Braking Safety

The braking system of Xylo has also been improved compared to the previous versions. And with anti-lock braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution, the car is sure to leave mark under heavy braking. In terms of safety, sadly neither ABS with EBD nor dual airbags are standard across the variants. All these amenities are given to the top end models which also features intellipark reverse assist system.
However, lower variants do get keyless entry, central locking, rear defogger and engine immobilizer in the safety department.
