Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has been part of the popular c-segment for quite some time now. The car continues to be one of the most loved sedans in India. It offers the premiumness of the luxury car and gets the basics of space, ease of driving spot on and ride quality. After pampering the Indian customers for 4 years and looking at what competition was offering, in 2018, the company rolled out its facelifted version that receives some cosmetic updates on the inside as well as outside. During this period, the car also went through a major transition, switching from typical Maruti dealership to premium Nexa dealership. The car also got new engine with SHVS mild-hybrid technology that has made the sedan more efficient.
On the outside, Maruti Ciaz looks more attractive and sophisticated than its older version. Its new front gives the car an all new personality. The old chrome slat has been replaced by the new and fresh radiator grille with ‘multi-pixel’ design. The refreshed headlamp cluster gets LED projector lamps, new bumper and new DRLs with LED fog lamps. On the sides, the overall silhouette remains the same but it gets new and stylish 16-inch alloys with pebble grey appearance. At the back, Maruti Ciaz gets tweaked bumper along with LED combination lamps, the chrome finish at the bottom gives the sedan a premium appeal. In terms of dimensions, new Maruti Ciaz measures 4490mm in length, 1730mm in width, 1485mm in height and gets the wheelbase of 2650mm. The ground clearance stands at 170mm while the boot space is 510L. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is available in seven different colour pallets namely Metallic Magma Grey, Pearl Midnight Black, Nexa Blue, Pearl Metallic Dignity Brown, Pearl Sangria Red, Pearl Snow White and Metallic Premium Silver.
On the inside too, the Ciaz receives major changes. It gets the new 4.2-inch TFT instrumentation console along with eco illumination and the recently introduced ‘Suzuki Connect’ telematics system. It adds the new colour instrumentation console and cruise control. In terms of tech, the Ciaz gets 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay. Along with that, it gets comfort features including passive keyless entry, intelligent key (push start/stop button), auto climate control, leather upholstery, steering mounted audio controls, electrically adjustable ORVMs and height adjustable driver’s seat.
The biggest change seen in the 2018 Ciaz is under the hood. The new Ciaz facelift receives the brand new 1.5L K-series petrol powertrain with mild hybrid technology. The new mill replaces the 1.4L unit that was powering the older model. The oil burner generates the power output of 105PS and belts out the maximum torque of 138Nm. The fuel efficiency figures as claimed by the ARAI are rated at 21.56kmpl for the manual and 20.28kmpl for automatic. As for the diesel engine, 2018 Ciaz will continue to be powered by the same 1.3L turbo charged mill. The oil burner churns the power output of 90PS and yields the maximum torque of 200Nm. The ARAI certified mileage figures stands at 28.09kmpl. Both the engines comes with standard five-speed manual gearbox while, its petrol mill has the option of 4-speed automatic as well.
As far as the safety is concerned, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz comes loaded to the gills and even the base variant gets the basic standard features that make it quite appealing. The standard features list includes ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, dual front airbags, pedestrian protection compliance, full frontal impact compliant, side impact compliant, and seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters. Other features in top variants include rear defogger, reverse parking sensor, anti-theft security system, automatic headlamps, speed alert system, electronic stability program with hill-hold and seat belt reminder (driver + Passenger). Maruti Ciaz 2018 facelift goes up against the rivals such as Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Rapid, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Vento.
Maruti Ciaz 2018 is offered in four different variants such as Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. As per the pricing, it starts from Rs. 8.19 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 11.02 lakh. The base trim Sigma is tagged at Rs. 8.19 lakh and Rs. 9.19 lakh for the petrol and diesel variants respectively. Maruti Ciaz Delta gets the price tag of Rs. 8.81 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 9.8 lakh for the diesel trim. The Zeta variant is tagged at Rs. 9.58 lakh for petrol and Rs. 10.62 lakh for diesel respectively. Its top of the line variant Alpha is available at the price tag of Rs. 9.97 lakh for petrol while its diesel trim is tagged at Rs. 11.02 lakh, ex-showroom.


The new Ciaz is not much different from the previous model as far as interiors are concerned. The moment you step inside, you will find familiar milieu. You won’t be getting any surprises here as the layout as ditto. But what you would really appreciate immediately when you hop on the driver’s seat is how easy all the things falls into your hands. The steering, the switches for climate control, power windows and boot release button, all comes handy as if you wanted them to be as it is.
Now as you have jumped onto the commanding position, you would notice the new features that have been added to this new version. The 4.2 inch TFT multi-information display with new dials in blue grabs your attention. The screen is the same which working in Baleno with the power and torque pie charts seems to be a clever manoeuvre, it can plaster a smile on your face the moment you stare at it. The display shows vital information about the car including fuel consumption, trip details, energy flow, gear shift indicator and driving range. The new cruise control feature let you pick up any speed above 40kmph making your highway journey comfortable.
The second change you will notice is that the steering wheel no longer remains blank. It now houses switches for the cruise control. Those who have eagle’s eye will also spot the finishing in the form of wood inserts which has been significantly made lighter which the Maruti calls as ‘birch blonde’. If you are transported around, you will definitely notice the utter kneeroom and legroom this car offer to the occupants. This comes on par with the popular Honda City absorbing 2 six-footers one behind the other without any problem. This is because the Ciaz is the biggest car in the segment measuring 4.5m in length.
And the thing that would make your journey a bit comfortable is the new adjustable headrests at the back. Unfortunately, this feature is only available in the top of the range variants. Similarly, the sunshade which keeps you cool in times of scorching heat, is only available in the top Zeta and Alpha variants. However, as expected from Maruti, the basics have been aptly done, the floor bump is not too high, so the window line while the presence of fabric/leather elbow pad enhances comfort. But the headroom and the under-thigh support could have been better.
Further, mostly like the earlier model, the new version seems to be well-equipped for the price. The sedan comes with 7-inch touchscreen infotainment powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The same infotainment can be used for connecting the smartphone via Bluetooth, USB and Aux-In along with in-built navigation, Mirror Link support and relaying feeds of the rear parking camera. Other comfort features in the car include automatic climate control, rear ac vents, electrically adjustable/foldable ORVMs and height adjustable driver seat.
The premium factor is enhanced by leatherette upholstery, chrome garnish on the steering, ac louvers, parking brake, floor console and inside door handles as well as leather wrapped steering wheel. Surprisingly, Maruti has avoided the sunroof for unknown reasons. In terms of storage and utilities, there is front centre armrest with utility box, rear centre armrest with cup holders, front and rear accessory socket and sunglass holder. The boot space is generous at 510L which is equal to Honda City and better than Hyundai Verna.
Overall, the cabin of the new Ciaz is well equipped and sufficient enough to keep the youth happy and comfortable.


When talking about the exteriors, one valid question will pop in the mind ‘is the new one looks different from the older one’? And honestly, the answer to this query will totally depend on the type of variant you are looking at. For example, the top of the line Alpha variant can be easily differentiated from the retired model while the other variant will again need ‘eagle’s eye vision’. The new Ciaz comes with all-LED projector headlamps along with LED fog lamps and the tail lamps.
And let not forget the new chic design for the solid 16-inch alloy wheels and the chrome decoration on the rear bumper. Now if you move down to the variant line-up, there are limited aesthetic changes in the form of redesigned grille and bumper at the front. The new grille is different from the horizontal slats of the outgoing model. It now comes with sleeker grille featuring multi-segmented dashes or say, mesh-like detailing with the signature logo taking the center stage. The grille is not only pretty but also wider and connects to the headlamps. The chrome underlining further accentuates the aura at the front.
The bumper adds a little aggression with wider air dam and protruding c-shaped outline for the foglamps. Maruti hasn’t played around with the side profile and the rear much. A revamped rear would have taken this to a whole new level. However, if you really want to give a dash of sportiness, you can choose body kit and spoiler from the list of accessories. Overall, Ciaz looks much better from the earlier version, especially when you stare at it from the front.

Mileage Running Cost

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has always been a fuel efficient sedan and this time around the addition of SHVS technology, there is some improvement. The claimed fuel efficiency of the petrol version is 21.56kmpl for the manual while for the automatic, the figures stands at 20.28kmpl.
On the other hand, the diesel version returns 28.09kmpl. Though the figures are on paper yet in real world, the difference is not huge as the automatic can deliver around 17kmpl, the manual petrol can return around 19kmpl. If we take the same parameter for granted, the diesel can easily deliver around 24kmpl, which is excellent to say the least.

Comfort Suspension

The ride and handling of this sedan is absolutely predictable. And unlike the predecessor SX4 which had a stiff suspension, Ciaz comes with soft suspension which offers absorbent ride quality at lower speeds. The car feels nice and composed on smooth roads and feels planted on high speeds, enough to instil confidence in the driver. Having said that, at high speeds especially above triple digit speeds, the rear passengers would feel vertical bobbling when the vehicle goes over an undulation on the surface.
At lower speeds too, the ride is comfortable and the ground clearance is also not a problem either as the car is capable of handling the non-existent road quite well. However, you would feel vertical movement when going over some bad craters. This is due to soft damping, so the ideal way is to make the most out of joyful ride, drive it on the highways.
In terms of handling, the car has been crafted to make the driving more relaxing, not engaging. And the sheer example is that the steering weight has been tuned to be feather-light in cities while solid on highways. Throw it at the corners and the steering is practically quick but don’t expect loads of feedback.

Engine Performance

The facelifted Ciaz gets updated petrol engine in the form 1.5L unit which also comes with SHVS or mild hybrid technology. Kick off the engine and it sizzles to life with a minor strum that quickly fades away. And at most of the times, the engine loves to be quiet. However, the moment you start thrashing it, the engine becomes vocal but that too give you unusual joy. The updated engine is good for making 105PS and 138Nm of torque and it pumps out more horses (12.5PS) and 8Nm of additional torque than the previous motor.
The additional power makes the engine more or less similar to the outgoing one. You will find it neither exciting nor inadequate at any point of driving. However, the main emphasis here seems to be the drivability. The moment you let the clutch go off, the car makes swift progress. Also, the engine doesn’t mind if you drag it a bit, so whenever you spot a speed breaker, you don’t have to downshift to the first gear every time. When the car is in second gear, it should work fine too. The car in lower gears feels like you are driving a diesel car. In the second gear, you are capable of doing unsoiled start from 0kmph, without any complaint from the engine.
And it does quiet skilfully as if it’s like driving in the familiar surroundings. You can potter in and around the town the whole day and you will not feel tired as it seems to give peace of mind in the city. On the contrary, the things become different when you are on the highways. It’s not like that the car lacks power or isn’t able to cruise comfortably at three digit speeds. It can ace it without breaking a sweat. But the only qualm is when you are overtaking quickly, it stutters a bit doing that.
It’s not the case with cars such as Verna and City as these vehicles need nothing more than a little push on the throttle to quickly gather speed. In Ciaz, you need to work on gears or downshift to achieve that sweet spot of getting in front of the vehicle ahead. The petrol powered Ciaz comes in two transmission options; 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic. Most people will still prefer buying the manual one as it doesn’t demand frequent gear shifting. Moreover, the action of the gear is smooth and the clutch also feels super light in cities.
However, if you really want to choose automatic, it does add to the driving convenience, especially when you want relaxed driving to and fro from your work. But note, it is not as snappier as the manual gearbox, however it will do the job most of the times. The diesel engine on the other hand, is the 1.3L turbo-charged unit sourced from Fiat which pumps out 90PS and 200Nm of torque. The engine is good but can’t match the performance of rival Verna, Vento and Rapid. There is turbo lag which is especially noticeable in the upper band of gear ratios. Overall, the diesel Ciaz is an average performer as compared to rivals.
As far as the SHVS is concerned, though it has been tried and tested in the diesel engine, it is the first time that mild-hybrid technology comes paired with a petrol engine. The SHVS comes in the form of lithium-ion battery which is coupled with an integrated starter generator. This switches off the engine when the car is in neutral state and brings it back to life the moment you put off your foot from the clutch. This does increases efficiency right to some extent.

Braking Safety

Braking is balanced and there is short pedal travel before the brakes bite. Hard braking will make the car feel stable and maintain composure at the same time. And it seems ABS comes into action unexpectedly earlier which is a good thing.
As far as safety kit is concerned, the standard list of features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and pedestrian protection compliance and seat belt pretensioners with force limiters. Other advanced feature include ESP with hill hold assist, automatic headlamps, reverse parking camera, rear defogger, driver and passenger seat belt reminder and speed alert system.
