Replacing a blockbuster vehicle is always a hard balancing job for an automaker as drastic changes don’t always go in line with the devoted fan following. And sticking to the same formula can take the shine away from an established car. So, Maruti has just got it right, the carmaker introduced the third-generation model of Swift in the country. Maruti first introduced the hatchback back in the year 2005 followed by update in 2011, facelift in 2014 and now the third generation model in 2018. The all-new car looks just tempting with all the things just placed right. The Maruti Swift undoubtedly looks stylish with better equipment level. It’s more efficient, more spacious and loaded with modern features and safety aspects. This time, company has provided a complete overhaul of the outer and inner design while the same engines will continue to do their duties.
In terms of design, the new Swift looks slightly larger than its predecessor but the changes in the overall dimensions seem to be minimal. The hatch is about 40mm wider, 10mm shorter in length while its wheelbase is 20mm longer. The kerb weight is the thing that makes a lot of difference as it has managed to be 110kg lighter than its older version, thanks to the all-new heartect platform that makes the car lose remarkable weight. The typical young and sporty vibe is unharmed.
The front façade get multi-slat radiator grille with no chrome providing the car a decent look. The swept-back headlamps and raising window line along with revamped tail-lamps further refreshes the appearance. The new Swift is available in 6 graceful colour options viz; Pearl Metallic Lucent Orange (New), Solid Fire Red, Pearl Metallic Midnight Blue, Metallic Silky Silver, Pearl Arctic White, and Metallic Magma Grey.
Step inside, and you will sense the familiar environment of Maruti. Swift shares its dashboard with the Dzire with changes in details such as round central air cons instead of angular ones and many more. All-black theme inside makes a distinct appeal while hooded instrument panel gets smart red detailing. The Swift comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include auto climate control, rear parking sensors, keyless entry, steering mounted audio controls and push start/stop button. Seating position is driver friendly while seats are large and well cushioned.
New Swift continues to house the same 1.2L K-series petrol and 1.3L DDiS diesel mill. The petrol engine generates 82bhp and yields the peak torque of 113Nm. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is capable of generating 74bhp and maximum torque at 190Nm. The engines are now available with 5-speed automatic transmission while the 5-speed manual remains as usual.
Coming to safety, Maruti Suzuki Swift comes loaded with features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist along with ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard. Other features include engine immobilizer, rear wiper, automatic headlamps, central locking and turn indicators on ORVMs.
Maruti Swift is available in four different variants such as L, V, Z and Z+ and pricing remain competitive. Taking a quick glance at the pricing details, its base trim L has been priced at Rs. 4.99 lakh while the top-spec variant is priced at Rs. 8.29 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi. With more practicality, more style, and upmarket interiors, the new Swift has now become superior in many ways. And with all these qualities, it currently challenges the likes of Hyundai Grand i10 and Ford Figo in the segment.

Inside, you can find Suzuki’s signature design and feature all across the cabin. The car features an all-black interior theme while the seats are now better contoured for comfort. The curved panels and flat-bottomed steering wheels are special and exclusive to the Swift.
Further, the feature list includes automatic climate control, engine start-stop button with smart key and integrated SmartPlay infotainment system that connects with Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, and Mirror Link. The same 7-inch touchscreen system also gets Navigation with Aux-In, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and visuals for rear parking camera. Maruti has also given room for smaller options such as cooled glovebox, large front door pockets while facilities such as 12V charging points, 2 cupholders, luggage room lamp and 60:40 rear seat split makes the car more tempting.

The design of the all new Swift has undergone drastic transformation and vehicle now looks more bold, younger and soothing to eyes. The car is considerably different from the outgoing model, while the name is over 12 years old, it’s enough to attract a large chunk of young enthusiasts. All this comes from the new Heartect platform, which also underpins siblings Dzire and Baleno. The car features revised radiator grille, sportier bumper and new LED projector headlights along with LED DRLs.
One of the biggest changes in 2018 Swift is the position of rear door handles which now have been moved up. The car gets new precision cut 15-inch alloy wheels lending it a sportier look. The rear profile gets sharper edges on the tailgate, wider glass and square rendering of the tail-lamps. The retro look comes from the smooth curves across the body, flared wheel arches, and tight rear profile. Maruti Swift also grows in proportion with 20mm longer wheelbase and 40mm in width which makes the car increase in space inside. This has also improved shoulder room as well as boot space.

Mileage Running Cost

The lower kerb weight of the car puts less load on the engine, hence, greater fuel economy. The petrol variant of Swift returns ARAI certified mileage of 22kmpl, 8 percent more frugal than the earlier model. The diesel version, on the other hand, makes the car as the most fuel efficient in the country with the ARAI certified mileage of 28.4kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension has been tuned for sportier performance and comfort. The wonderful thing is that irrespective of the fast entering at corners the car shows absolutely no sign of understeer. The car exhibits excellent body control while the bump absorption is pretty much impressive, thanks to the Heartec chassis and revamped suspension.

Engine Performance

The tried and tested duo; 1.2L petrol and the 1.3L DDiS diesel engines continue to serve the car. The 1.2L petrol mill churns out 82bhp and returns peak torque of 113Nm, while 1.3L diesel motor generates power output of 74bhp and yields the peak torque of 190Nm. Apart from the manual 5-speed transmission, the carmaker has addressed the long-standing demand of automatic transmission this time around with both diesel and petrol engines given the power of automatic.
The refinement levels of the petrol engine are excellent and feel more alive and peppy at low speeds. As the diesel is shown to have more interest in kmpl rather than kmph, the performance at low speed is fair and adequate. The performance at high speed though is brilliant and the high-mileage consumer will certainly appreciate it.

Braking Safety

The brakes of the car are on point and noticeably better than the earlier model. The car comes to halt in a straight line without any drama. And as opposed to the predecessor, the inclusion of ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard fitment helps the car have a better grip on the road.
The safety is further leveled up by standard dual front airbags and ISOFIX child seats. Move on to the top variants and you get reverse parking camera with sensors, engine immobilizer, central locking and pinch guard power window.

The new Maruti Swift was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo and being the 2nd most popular car in India, I had to test drive it. It is an absolute favorite hatchback for Indians. The beloved car looks different from the outside now but the facelift isn’t too major. Minor tweaks and it seems a bit fresh now. On to Read More
