Nissan Sunny has been on sale in the Indian market since 2011 and is doing fairly well in the subcontinent. Offering one of the most refined engines, sleek outer design, excellent driving dynamics and features, Nissan Sunny marks a distinction in its class. In 2014, Sunny was launched with some minor tweaks inside and out to make it more appealing to the buyers. Recently, the company has introduced the refreshed version of the Sunny in the market. Its 2017 facelift has been given a price cut for better sales. It now comes with minor interior and exterior updates but the specifications remain the same.
On the outside, new 2017 Sunny facelift get big boomerang headlamps, tweaked front radiator grille, fog lamps with chrome housing. The front radiator grille is full chrome along with the chrome strips while a big Nissan badge is fixed at the center. From the side view, Nissan Sunny now gets turn indicators on ORVMs and the doors look large with huge windows. At the rear, tail lamp flows well with the overall looks of the car while the rear bumper has the pleasant fiber lip that adds to the classy looks.
The car measures 4455mm in length, 1695mm in width, 1515mm tall and comes with the wheelbase of 2600mm. In terms of colours, Nissan Sunny gets the newly added Sandstone Brown paint along with others such as Bronze Grey, Night Shade, Pearl White, Blade Silver and Onyx Black.
On the inside, the dashboard of Nissan Sunny gets the layout which is similar to the previous model. It gets piano black centre console and the leather-upholstered comfortable seats with a beige toned dash. In terms of tech, Nissan Sunny comes equipped with a string of comfort and infotainment unit. The features included in the list are air conditioner, rear parking camera, height adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, steering mounted audio controls, climate control, push start/stop button and electrically adjustable rear view mirror. Additional amenities include 12V accessory socket, two rear reading lamps and follow me headlamps.
Under the hood, Nissan Sunny is powered by the same petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5L petrol mill is capable of generating the power output of 99PS and peak torque of 134Nm. Its 1.5L diesel powertrain can churn the power output of 86PS and yields that maximum torque of 200Nm. Both the engines come with the 5-speed manual gearbox while the petrol mill can also be availed with CVT in the top of the line VX variant. The fuel economy figures are 16.65kmpl for the petrol and 22.71kmpl for the diesel variant.
In terms of safety, Nissan Sunny is aided with the safety provisions like airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake force distribution, engine immobilizer, Brake Assist, Central locking, power door lock, child safety lock and turn indicators on ORVMs.
Nissan Sunny is available in three different variants they are XE, XL and XV. As per the pricing is concerned, Nissan Sunny’s base trim XE gets the price tag of Rs. 6.99 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 7.82 lakh for the diesel variant. Its mid-range variant XL is offered at the price tag of Rs. 7.92 lakh and Rs. 8.3 lakh for the petrol and diesel trims respectively. It’s top of the line variant XV is tagged at Rs. 9.5 lakh while its XV trim with the CVT is available at the price tag of Rs. 9.44 lakh, ex-showroom.
Nissan Sunny goes against the likes in the segment including Honda City, Volkswagen Vento, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Rapid and Hyundai Verna.

The cabin this time around has been upholstered in all-black. The fabric seats and black interior panels look more interesting and luxurious. The brush metal highlights on the dashboard, piano black centre console, leather-wrapped steering, chrome lined dials and silver accents further lifts up the spirit of richness. The choice of materials has been evolved for better and to stay on par with the competition. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather for a more premium look. The audio controls adorned in chrome look pleasing to eyes.
In terms of entertainment, the Sunny gets the same 5.1 inch touchscreen 2-DIN audio unit. The infotainment also offers connectivity features including Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in as well as doubles up display for rear parking camera feeds. Although looking at what contemporaries are offering, exclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is certainly disappointing. However, this time around, the car gets features like intelligent key and push engine start/stop button.
The area where this car shines is the seating and space. The sedan has got shocking amount of space at the rear. The caaaar factor can be evident in the ample amount of legroom, headroom and shoulder room, just behind the Ciaz in its class. There is absolutely no feeling of tightness and in fact, the car is astonishingly airy from inside. The feeling of roominess is also present at the front. The mammoth 490L of boot space is stunning and dumping large suitcases will never be a problem.

The new Nissan Sunny remains unchanged for the 2017 model year except a few bits such as chrome door handles and a new brown colour option. The car continues to sport the similar face which was launched back in the year 2014. The sedan follows company’s new design philosophy which can be seen in other Nissan cars such as Micra and other cars being sold internationally.
At the front, the car features large boomerang shaped headlamps and prominent chrome front grille. The huge grille and wide airdam below seems to create an ‘X’ design when viewed from front. The bumper at the front sports fog lamps in a leaf-like enclosure with chrome accents, adding to the grown-up look of the vehicle. At the sides, the car remains identical with the same 12-spoke Y-shaped alloys which certainly look sportier than before.
The new chrome laden door handles does add to the premiumness. The ORVMs incorporates turn indicators keeping in line with the contemporaries. At the rear, it seems that the similar flow of ‘X’ design is carried forward with the wrap-around tail lights and sleeker bumper.

Mileage Running Cost

The Japanese carmaker still holds its claim it earlier made that it has optimized the diesel engine by recalibrating the ECU which in turn, helps the engine get more for less. Where Nissan Sunny diesel returns ARAI certified mileage of 22.7kmpl, the petrol manual and petrol automatic version delivers 16.95kmpl and 17.97kmpl respectively.

Comfort Suspension

The excellent ride and handling is one of the virtues of owning this car, thanks to the long wheelbase. The suspension setup has been tweaked especially for the Indian road conditions. This results in a perfect balance of ride and handling struck by the Japanese carmaker.
And if combined with the seating space at the rear, the car just hits the sweet spot in terms of comfort. At the back, the passengers will not feel any bounciness or extreme vertical movements. The suspension set-up is mature and offers composed ride at moderate city speeds and even at triple digit speeds, right to some extent. The potholes and bumps are immersed without any bounce, twitch or sharp blows. The handling on the other hand, is also predictable and the car feels planted even on the faster curves.

Engine Performance

Mechanically, the car continues to sport the same diesel and petrol engines. The petrol engine is the 1.5L 4-cylinder HR15 unit that produces 99PS of power and 134Nm of max torque. The engine comes with the option of either 5-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission. The powertrain as usual gives effortless performance and responsive as soon as you press the accelerator. The engine is perfect for cruising in and around the city. The automatic CVT gives a rubber band effect with the engine straining and giving out loud noise until it synchronizes well with the transmission.
On the contrary, the diesel engine is tuned differently this time around. The 1.5L 4-cylinder K9K dCi motor makes 86PS of power and 200Nm of max torque, paired to 5-speed manual transmission. The engine shows minimal lag in the urban areas and pulls up well from low speeds. Though there is lack of spike in power one generally associates the diesel engine with, however, the motor is refined.

Braking Safety

The braking capability of the car is really commendable. The sedan is able to halt much faster than one could expect even from 100 to 0 kmph. And what is better that the car comes to halt in a straight line without any fishtailing. However, there is improvement needed in the brake pedal.
Talking about the safety further, Nissan this time around has bestowed the car with driver airbag, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard features. The top end variants gets addition aspects such as front passenger airbag, anti-theft alarm system, front fog lamps and seat belt warning lamp. Other common features include central locking, speed sensing auto-door lock and engine immobilizer.

I still remember when the advertisements for the Nissan Sunny came out. ‘Its not a car, It’s a caaaar’ I loved it. Still makes me smile. My brother finally bought the Sunny a little while ago. I get to drive it occasionally. It’s a Sunny XE Diesel in Onyx black. It’s definitely the best good looking car we have owned Read More

My car is two year old and done about 33000 Kms. As against the company's claim of 22 KmLtr, I am getting around 14 to 15 Kms mileage in Chennai city. I got it inspected by Nissan Technical advisor. No improvement. I am happy with other aspects.

I am happy with the leg room, dicky space and interiors. Hand rests are not very comfortable. Dash board must be designed to accommodate more storage space. Fuel efficiency must be improved. Each owner give different claims ranging from 16Km to 21 KmsLtr. I do not find any consistency with regard to mileage. My car is not giving more than Read More

    The most practical car around

This is a not a beauty contest participant but a vehicle that delivers so much more. The kind of comfort and space the Sunny offers is unmatched at this price point. As both a chauffeur driven or a family car, the Sunny seems as an excellent option. The interior design is bland but Nissan has made up by offering features. Read More
