Overview

Renault introduced the Kwid hatchback in the year 2015. Due to its competitive pricing and amazing features the car became an instant hit. It can be stated as a game changing product for the French carmaker in the country. After some time, the company decided to give it a facelift in 2018 in order to keep it aligned with the contemporary vehicles and ramp up its sales. Renault before launching the facelift tried to increase the number by special edition models like ‘Live For More Reloaded’ edition and ‘Superhero’ edition. The 2018 Renault Kwid facelift was a much needed update for the hatchback. The facelift version got some cosmetic updates along with the interior changes. But the 2019 version is a notch above with updated interiors as well as standard set of safety features. The engine in the car remains the same as seen in the older model.
Checking the exteriors, the new Renault Kwid gets many changes on the outside. Though, you might not notice the changes at first glance but taking a closer look will make you feel the bit of freshness it gets. The front facade gets the updated radiator grille that features bold chrome element and company call it as ‘Razor Edged Chrome’ grille. Other bits like front bumper, halogen headlamps and round fog lamps remain the same. Moving to the sides, Renault has now done away with the signature chequered flag decals. The car rides on twin 3-spoke alloy wheels. At the back, Renault Kwid remains the same leaving the rear part untouched. However, you will notice the additional rear view camera. Dimensionally, Renault Kwid measures 3679mm in length, 1579mm in width, 1478mm in height and gets the wheelbase of 2422mm. ground clearance stands at 180mm and boot space is 300 L. Renault Kwid is available in six different colour schemes namely Ice Cool White, Outback Bronze, Fiery Red, Planet Grey, Electric Blue And Moonlight Silver.
On the inside, the 2019 Renault Kwid receives various noticeable updates especially in terms of techs and gadgetry. The car gets 7-inch touchscreen media NAV unit on the dashboard, powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which itself is the biggest USP for the hatchback, as only few carmakers in the segment offer this feature. The infotainment also get video playback and push-to-talk aka voice recognition functionality. It also gets new 12-Volt charging socket below the C-pillar. The new Kwid also gets USB socket with fast charging capability, a segment first feature.
The car also features rear parking camera which is also the segment first feature. The rest of the cabin remains the same, offering the all-black interior with dual tone upholstery, digital instrument cluster, air conditioner with heater, fuel lid and tailgate inner release, rear parcel tray, front power windows, electric power steering and rear seat arm rest.
In terms of specifications, 2018 Kwid remains the same. The hatchback is powered by the same engine that does its duty in the older car. Its gets 2 petrol engine options for the buyers to choose from; 0.8 litre and 1.0 litre. The small 0.8L mill can churn the power output of 54PS and yields the maximum torque of 72Nm. The engine comes mated to 5-speed manual transmission. Its 1.0L petrol oil burner generates the power output of 68PS and the maximum torque of 91Nm. The engine comes with 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox option. In terms of fuel efficiency, its 0.8L mill returns the claimed mileage figures of 22.7kmpl and 1.0L engine delivers 21.7kmpl while with AMT gearbox the car is able to return 22.5kmpl of mileage.
As for the safety of its occupants, the new Kwid comes loaded with various features. The new additions in this respect are much welcomed. The car gets driver airbag, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, speed-sensing auto door lock, overspeeding alert, driver & passenger seat belt reminder and reverse parking sensors as standard. Other feature in the list includes child safety lock, central locking, engine immobilizer, power door lock, front seat belts with pre-tensioners, front seat belt reminder, remote keyless entry, intermittent front wiper and high mounted stop lamp.
Renault Kwid is available in total of five different variants such as Standard, RXE, RXL, RXT and Climber. In terms of pricing, Renault Kwid is tagged quite competitively which makes it one of the most alluring hatchbacks in the country. The base variant of Kwid named Standard is tagged at Rs. 2.67 lakh while Kwid RXE is available at the price tag of Rs. 3.1 lakh. The Kwid RXL is tagged at Rs. 3.36 lakh while the RXT trim is offered at the price tag of Rs. 4.04 lakh. It’s top of the line variant Kwid Climber MT is tagged at Rs. 4.33 lakh. The Kwid is also available with Automatic gearbox in RXT and Climber variants, pricing stated as Rs. 4.34 lakh and Rs. 4.6 lakh respectively. Renault Kwid competes against the likes such as Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Datsun Redi GO and New Hyundai Santro in the segment.

Interior

Being a budget car, Kwid’s cabin comes with a lot of compromises but looking at the price point one would not be complaining much. But the good thing is that the economizing elements have been kept minimal and the vehicle has been fairly put together. The engineers and designers have ensured no compromises with the day to day driving. Having said that, the plastic quality will be slightly let down. Step inside the cabin and the first thing that would attract the eyeballs is the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which has been shared from elder sibling Duster.
The infotainment system is outlined by piano black bezel with a touch of chrome as a contrasting element for enhancing its appeal. In the latest update, the infotainment now gets the power of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other usual connectivity features such as USB, Bluetooth and Aux-in remain intact. This is the only budget car that offers factory fitted touchscreen infotainment unit. The car also gets first in class reverse parking camera, visuals of which are displayed on the same infotainment screen. Moving further, the controls for ac vents are placed below the infotainment. All the vents can be shut own independently. But it will not be a problem for the base model as it does not even get the air conditioning. Oops.
Switches for the power windows, hazard lights and central locking and also placed below. This seems to be a clear cost-cutting step from the carmaker as they don’t have to put a separate switch on the driver’s side. In terms of storage and utility, the car gets 12V charging point and cup holders below the centre console and ahead of the gear lever. The passengers also get small cubby in between the gear knob and the handbrake as well. The co-passenger get upper and lower glovebox with the former also get a space to hold a water bottle. The lower one is also large enough to hold plenty of stuffs while there is an open storage shelf in between the two. Further, there are door map pockets on both the sides which allow the passenger to store 1L bottle. So, being the budget car, the French automaker has left no stone unturned in terms of practicality.
Looking things through driver’s eyes, the car gets cute little steering which is good to hold as well as stylish to stare at. Insert the key into the ignition, turn your fingers clockwise and you will see that the car isn’t meant for trick the buyers with the infotainment unit. The orange illuminated digital instrument cluster is really a segment above thing. The instrument with inbuilt trip computer gives nice read out of the current speed along with host of other information. The panel gives info on odometer, trip meter, distance to empty, average fuel consumption, real-time fuel consumption, trip fuel consumption, distance travelled as well as average speed.
Further, the stalks of headlight and turn indicator are easily accessible from the steering wheel. It also consists of a lane change feature which works with a small tap that blinks the indicator thrice and shuts off automatically. The speakers at the front are installed on either side of the dashboard and the quality of sound is satisfactory but music enthusiasts might want to upgrade. The headrests at the front and fixed and aren’t adjustable while the front seats are upholstered in triple shade red, grey and black. And the seats give you more comfort than in other cars such as Alto with decent under thigh support.
Move to the rear and this car has a clear advantage over the rivals Eon and Alto. Tall occupants would find more comfort as compared to the competition. Three adults can sit but it would be an uncomfortable affair, so it is better the rear seats are used by 2 adults only. Here also you will find the same triple tone upholstery as done at the front. Though the seats lack contours but the cushioning is decent. Seating position is fairly high that provides good view of the road ahead. There is also a 12V power socket for the rear passengers.
In terms of boot space, it’s huge at 300L, even better than segment above cars. And if it is still not sufficient for you, then flip the second row and you will unleash a herculean 1115L of space which is incredible to say the least. Now talking about the Climber variant, the model comes with orange highlights on the dashboard, seats, door pads as well as on the gear knob along with badges on the headrests and steering. The Climber variant also gets rear armrest for extra comfort. Overall, the French automaker has cleverly and tastefully crafted the interiors and you get a lot for your money.

Exterior

Knowing the fact that Kwid is a budget car, Renault hasn’t stepped back from experimenting different things. And that’s make this car a unique one in its class. The Kwid is one such car in its segment that offers a SUV flavour. The tall and beefy stance with plastic wheel arches enhances the SUV appeal. At the front, the grille design gives us a futuristic feeling with the lower variant having honeycomb pattern, the upper variants comes with new razor sharp edge chrome grille. There are tons of other customization options the carmaker is offering with this car.
The bumper has been revised and it now comes with added bulges to add some muscle to the car. The bonnet features similar masculine creases. The bumper also houses rounded fog lamps while the bottom containing the air dam is pretty reminiscent to the grill. The C-shaped chrome accents in the blackened headlamp housing looks pretty cool.
At the sides, the car isn’t much tall as with the case with typical SUVs in fact, the profile is characterized by large windows and high window line. The black cladding at the bottom is not plastic as we have seen in cars such as Grand i10, but it’s a vinyl sticker. However, there is always an option to upgrade it to the plastic one from the list of accessories.
The new Kwid features 13-inch rims that comes fitted in the 155mm tyre with only 3 lug nuts to hold them in place. The car also offer full wheel covers with an option of black finishing. This makes the car look a bit more decent. With the new update, the car also gets dual-toned ORVM but you will not find turn indicators on this piece, they are actually located on front wheel arches. The variant badging can be seen just behind the rear window. Coming to the rear, there is minimalistic badging with the Renault one taking the centre stage, and a small one placed on the left. The bottom portion of the rear bumper gets black cladding as a standard fitment. The roof top consists of a u-shaped depression for increasing rigidity of the car and compensating the skinny sheet metal used.
The roof spoiler is standard across the variants adding character to the rear profile. Talking about the Climber variant, it gets new black cladding surrounding the fog lamps, faux silver skid plates with orange elements at the front. At the sides, it gets orange turn indicators placed on the wheel arches, dual-toned black-orange ORVM covers, roof rails with orange highlights, Climber decals and alloy wheels lookalike full wheel covers. Overall, it appears that the car doesn’t seem to get old and get attractive with every update.

Mileage Running Cost

Renault has developed one of the fuel efficient engines for the Indian market and the same has been given to the Kwid. The 800cc petrol engine develops ARAI certified mileage of 25.17kmpl. The 1.0L engine on the other hand returns 21.7kmpl with the manual transmission while with AMT gearbox, the fuel efficiency stands at 22.5kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The French automaker is known for offering a great deal of comfort when it comes to ride and handling, the popular Duster and the MPV Lodgy are sheer examples of it. The Kwid follows the suit as the suspension in the car has been tuned to be on the softer side, despite being a city car. The soft suspension help the car gulps potholes and other road imperfections quite well.
The class leading higher ground clearance converts to body rolls at tight corners. But the car is still fun to chuck around the corners as the handling is quite predictable. The downside here is the large 5m turning radius due to which the driver will need extra effort to get in and out of the tight spaces. In comparison, Alto has 4.6mm of turning radius, so here it has a clear advantage as far as city driving is concerned.
Coming to the steering, it is light at low speeds while it continues to be the same on the high speeds as well which is a bit of disadvantage. So, it is better to keep the car speed low and below 100kmph mark and it won’t let you complain.

Engine Performance

The updated Kwid continues to source its power from the set of petrol engine options. The 800cc 3-cylinder engine makes 54PS and 72Nm of torque, paired with 5-speed manual transmission. The powertrain feel easy with a couple of occupants inside but when more people join along with some luggage, the vehicle tends to struggle. This small engine is meant for urban driving conditions, so expecting outright performance from it is not fair enough. It will help you commute from one point to the other without any fuss.
However, when it comes to refinement, it isn’t the most polished one out there. The buzzing from the 3-cylinders is indispensable while the engine also fails to muffle its voice. And this becomes worse when you move to the upper half of the rev band. In comparison, the Alto and Eon are much unobtrusive both at the idle state and while on the go.
The 1.0L engine on the other hand shares its architecture with the younger 800cc one. The company has just increased the bore and stroke of the 800cc motor to increase the displacement and boost the drive shaft for added power. This adds 14PS of extra power but this isn’t apparent as you kick start the engine. What you will feel is the increased level of composure as the car builds up pace. This leads to better highway performance and the powertrain doesn’t feel exhausted even if driven to three-digit speed.
However, in terms of noise and vibration, it still remains identical to the 800cc engine, sounding grumpy when driven hard. In terms of acceleration, where the 0.8L engine increase desire for more grunt, the 1.0L feel just ok as 0-100kmph in the latter is achieved under 14 seconds which is indeed impressive. In fact the acceleration time is on par with segment above vehicles such as Maruti Swift and Ford Freestyle. The credit for this goes to the light weight of Kwid and the engine just complements this characteristic further.
And this is not the end of merits this car comes with. To counter the likes of Maruti Alto automatic transmission (AGS), Renault has been offering this car with the AMT gearbox. You just have to shell out extra Rs.30k over the manual counterpart. And the Kwid ‘Easy-R’ which Renault calls it, justifies the price. The AMT is one of the best so far in the budget segment with minimal shift shocks. The transmission picks up the acceleration inputs fairly well and makes swift progress.
With the new update, it also gets much needed creep function and the carmaker has labelled it as ‘Traffic Assist’. The creep function let the car creep forward at crawling speeds without the need of continuously pressing the accelerator while making progress in bumper to bumper traffic conditions. Having said that, the manual mode for help control gear changes is still missing, so Renault should work on this. Overall, the small car is one of the best city commuters.

Braking Safety

The braking setup has sufficient bite and the car stops without any drama. And with ABS with EBD in the latest update, you can now push this car a little hard as the front wheels will not lock-up. Besides ABS and EBD, the standard safety features of Kwid include driver side airbag, driver and passenger seat belt reminder, speed alert system, front seats: integrated headrests, rear seats: integrated neck rest and high mounted stop lamp.
Other safety aspects in the car include reverse parking camera, front fog lamps, remote keyless entry with central locking, intermittent front wiper & auto wiping while washing and engine immobilizer.
