Renault better known as Dacia in the other European countries introduced the large MPV Lodgy to give a new taste of utility vehicle to the Indian customers. The car offers ample amount of space for a large family. In India, seven-eight seater vehicles are gaining momentum day by day. And considering the large joint family system in the country, the idea of large vehicle surely fits the bill. Renault is coming up with new products every time that strikes the chord with the Indian buyers. Renault Lodgy was launched back in the year 2015, followed by Stepaway range in 2017, sharing a handsome chunk of the sales chart. Based on the same platform as Duster, Renault Lodgy is considered as the more affordable people mover as compared to expensive Toyota Innova Crysta.
On the outside, Renault Lodgy is quite an interesting looking MPV, thanks to its boxy body structure that makes it look massive. The front fascia gets modern MPV like A-pillar converging along the short sloping bonnet while the radiator grille gets the big Renault badge placed at the center. Its rear profile is rather boxy and gives the influence that the overall design has been taken back seat to increase the utility and space. The unconventional tail lamp design and the badging provide some premium touch to the back.
The thing that seems to be carried forward from Duster is the elaborated wheel arches and squat stance that makes the MPV look appealing. Renault Lodgy Stepway range gets new grille design, revamped front and rear bumper, body cladding, and badging on the front doors. Lodgy is offered in 5 different colour pallets they are Fiery Red, Pearl White, Royal Orchid, Moonlight Silver and Slate Grey.
Coming to its interiors, as the car gets the bigger wheelbase, it automatically translates to enough cabin space that makes for plenty of room at the second and third row. The center console is neat and houses the excellent 7-inch touchscreen multimedia-navigation that supports AUX, USB, and Bluetooth. The steering wheel is multi-functional and instrument cluster gets chrome rings. Dual tone quilted leather upholstery looks quite nice. Other features included in the vehicle are air conditioner, keyless entry, electrically adjustable rear view mirror, rear parking sensors and front armrest.
Under the hood, Renault Lodgy is powered by the 1.5L diesel mill with two states of tune. The engine mated to 5-speed manual gearbox generates power output of 85PS and maximum torque of 200Nm while the more powerful one with 6-speed manual gearbox produces 110PS of output and 245Nm of peak torque.
Safety aspects of Renault Lodgy include ABS and EBD as well as dual airbags, all standard across the range, and that is something a positive move by the company. Other features included in the list are engine immobilizer, rear wiper, central locking, child safety lock, power door lock and headlamp beam adjuster.
Renault Lodgy is available in a total of 4 different trims including STD, RXE, RXL, and RXZ. Its base variant gets the price tag of Rs. 8.33 lakh while the top spec model is tagged at Rs. 11.82 lakh. Its top-selling model Stepway 85PS RXL 8S is available at the price tag of Rs. 10.24 lakh. Presently, it competes against Honda BRV and Maruti Ertiga in the segment it falls in.

Enter the cabin and you will find that it’s fairly spacious and practical in every sense. The premiumness is enhanced by the leatherette seats. There is also an option for captain seats for the middle row with individual armrests. The dual tone dashboard is reminiscent of Duster but has a more premium touch, thanks to the shiny black center console with chrome garnish. The Stepaway version is adorned with all-black interiors.
One of the main highlights of the interiors is the 7-inch touchscreen unit borrowed from Duster with built-in navigation as well as contemporary inputs such as USB, Bluetooth, and Aux-In. It can also be paired flawlessly with your smartphone for music and calls. The car does not come with automatic climate control, but the air condition with vents in the second and third row does the decent job. Another interesting aspect of Lodgy is the massive boot space which though looks average at 207L, but folding the second and third row would give humongous 1861L of boot space.
The onboard instrument cluster gives the valuable information including average fuel economy, average speed, distance to empty and outside temperature. Other comfort features in the car include steering mounted audio controls, cruise control, adjustable lumbar support, tilt steering, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and 12 V charging sockets.

Looks are subjective and utilitarian for the kind of category it falls in. The car has nice touches with chrome garnishing on the grille, doors and the tailgate lending it an upmarket look. The front façade features large swept back headlamps and twin-slat chrome grille with the Renault badge sitting in the middle.
It’s only the side profile that makes you realize the length of this MPV. It is 4498mm in length, slightly shorter than 4585mm of Innova. The car comes with 15-inch wheels and the door cladding with chrome line running over it. The rear has the off-beat design with the taillights designed to depict an arrow in motion.
The Stepaway version of Lodgy needs special mention as the cosmetic changes are extensive. The aesthetic appeal of Stepaway is enhanced with the revised front bumper, jewel-studded grille and attractive looking fog lamps. The side profile features cladding on the wheel arches and doors with chrome inserts. It also gets new 16-inch Panache alloy wheels and larger silver roof rails. The rear portion, on the other hand, gets revamped bumper with silver skid plates, revised tailgate and minor tweaks to the taillights as well. Overall, the look of Stepaway has been significantly enhanced to attract people who are willing to spend more on this MPV.

Mileage Running Cost

Despite being a large MPV, the car doesn’t compromise on fuel efficiency. The Duster borrowed diesel engine does a terrific job and the owners won’t find any reason to complain. Where the 85PS version of Renault Lodgy is able to deliver ARAI certified fuel economy of 24kmpl, the more powerful 110PS version returns 20kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The car delivers outstanding ride quality and comfortable driving on any road. The ride quality is so awesome that you have to deliberately search for potholes to drive over. Thanks to the excellent suspension setup that the car comes with. Truly, Renault has found a sweet spot when it comes to ride and handling balance.
As far as NVH levels are concerned, the cabin is well insulated and the passengers won’t notice any noise seeping in.

Engine Performance

The car sources its power from the 1.5L 4-cylinder K9K diesel engine, the same which is working in the Duster. The carmaker has tuned the engine for two different power outputs; 85PS/200Nm torque and 110PS/245Nm. In terms of transmission, the low powered version is paired with 5-speed manual transmission, the higher one comes mated to 6-speed manual.
In terms of performance, the car doesn’t feel short on pulling the power. The initial throttle response is excellent and on the open roads, the car truly shines.

Braking Safety

The braking system of Renault Lodgy has an adequate bite and with ABS at play, the stopping capability is further enhanced. Other features in the safety kit include dual front airbags, EBD, Brake Assist, central locking, engine immobilizer, door ajar, warning, auto door lock, rear defogger and seat belt reminder.
