Skoda Rapid come to light in the year 2011 and with the launch, the vehicle acquired a handsome sum of sales in the segment it was intended for. It is the Skoda’s answer to the executive cars in the segment such as Hyundai Verna and Honda City. The car quickly turned into highest volume gainer in the Czech automaker’s India portfolio. Skoda Rapid being sold in India is based on Volkswagen’s PQ25 platform, unlike the Euro-spec models that are based on the MQB platform. After 5 years of lifespan and steady performance, Skoda again introduced the facelift version of the car in 2016 but that failed to garner the interest in the Indian car buyers. Recently, Skoda launched the special edition variant that’s been called as Rapid Edition with the competitive price tag and additional features. The new 2018 Edition is similar to the Monte Carlo edition which was launched last year and now got discontinued.

The new 2018 Skoda Rapid is a true masterpiece that comes with various improved features and additional gadgetry. The front façade gets the signature radiator grille that perfectly combines with the chrome surroundings. The vehicle gets the quartz-cut projector headlights with manual leveling function. The front bumper and fenders have been worked upon and look edgy. At the rear, the tail lamps have been tweaked while the bumper completes the overall looks. Dimensionally, the car remains the same measuring 4413mm in length, 1699mm in width, 1466mm high and comes with the wheelbase of 163mm. Skoda Rapid is available in vibrant colours namely Candy White, Cappuccino Beige, Brilliant Silver, Carbon Steel, Silk Blue and Flash Red.

On the inside, the new Rapid gets the all-black interiors along with red contrast stitching, this makes the vehicle look more sporting. The highlight is the Vento-like flat-bottomed steering wheel. New Skoda Rapid gets 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features included in the list are climate control, keyless entry, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, air conditioning unit, height-adjustable driver seat, rear parking sensor and electrically adjustable rear view mirror. The multi-information display remains the same giving info on distance traveled, average fuel efficiency, clock, outside temperature, service interval, etc.

The new 2018 Skoda Rapid carries the similar drivetrains. It gets the 1.6L MPI petrol engine that is capable of generating the power output of 105PS and maximum torque of 153Nm. The petrol mill comes with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with tiptronic manual gear changing technology. The 1.5L diesel powertrain can churn the power output of 110PS and generate the peak torque of 250Nm. Diesel engine comes mated to 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

Safety features present in the new 2018 Skoda Rapid are all contemporary and ensures better safety of its occupants. Its wide array of safety aspects includes 4 airbags, ABS, Hill hold control, Electronic stability control, child proof rear door locking, Acoustic warning signal for overrun speed, parktronic sensor at rear, rear windscreen defogger, central locking, engine immobilizer and rain sensing wipers.

Currently, Skoda Rapid is offered in three different trim levels such as Active, Ambition and Style. It’s pricing starts from Rs. 10.96 lakh and goes up to Rs. 13.92 lakh. Rapid Edition is based on the top-end style variant of the normal Skoda Rapid and that’s why it costs 30,000 extra. Skoda Rapid presently takes on more accomplished rivals including Honda City, Volkswagen Vento, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Hyundai Verna in the segment.

The cabin inside is in line with the familiar cars such as Polo and Vento. Everything from the dashboard, placement of buttons and switches and even the door pads are reminiscent to siblings. However, the introduction of black piano theme has certainly raised the premium appeal. Other variants continue to be available in the classy beige and black or ebony-sand theme. The red contrast stitching on the seats in the top-spec Rapid lends it a more sporty character. The car has also been bestowed with a lot of chrome across the cabin.

The layout is pretty reasonable and takes much less time to get accustomed. And the tilt/reach and height adjustability of the steering is a clear evidence of how comfortable one can get in no time. The steering is donned in leather and is the perfect size for the car. It also features audio, call and cruise controls. However, the carmaker has finally responded to the demand for flat-bottom steering wheel after getting a lot of feedback from customers. The multi-information display gives host of information including distance traveled, travel time, instant fuel efficiency, average speed, distance to empty, outside temperature, average fuel efficiency, service interval, clock as well as gear-shift indicator.

The center console shows the same substantial layout featuring a pair of AC vents, automatic climate control interface and the same 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment. The slick touchscreen is now powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and paired with 4-speakers which give quality audio output. This along with MirrorLink collectively serves the purpose of Skoda’s SmartLink infotainment, all which enables the driver to use the devices safely. The infotainment also displays the visuals from the rear parking camera. Other variants continue to sport the 2-DIN audio system along with USB, Bluetooth, Aux-In and card reading functionality.

The automatic air conditioning unit gives you no reason to complain. The system swiftly manages to cool the cabin in quick time. And with rear aircons, the passengers at the back wouldn’t grumble about the hot weather either. The rear seating space is a little bit cramped compared to rivals and the low-set flat bench doesn’t do justice to the comfort level. However, the backrest can be reclined at a comfortable angle while the rear armrest lifts up the comfort factor a notch. The fifth passenger will definitely find the leg space annoying, so if you are looking for long journeys, make sure you don’t let the fifth passenger inside.

Other comfort aspects include height adjustable driver’s seat, one-touch automatic operating power windows, cruise control, automatic front wipers, automatically-dimming rear-view mirror and cooled glovebox among others. The latest update does add a little breath to the interiors. However, it isn’t a radical departure from the previous version.

The sedan is built on the similar platform as of Volkswagen Vento and differencing both of them sometimes becomes tricky. The car continues to sport the same face which was launched back in 2016. The design team has carried forward the front fascia from the Mk3 Fabia which is on sale in the global markets. The smokes projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs and signature butterfly grille are the main highlights on the front. The 2018 Edition goes a step further and deploys black finishing on the grille which makes the car look really cool.

The bumper design also remains the same which was revamped in the last update. The bumper houses a set of cornering fog lamps while the bonnet perfectly gels with the front fascia with its own strong creases, emphasizing its own aggressiveness.

The side profile is also carried forward with the same shoulder line running across the length of the vehicle. At this point, the similarities with Vento become more outward. This isn’t a bad thing at all given the Vento itself has a clutter-free design. However, what’s considerable this time is the addition of new 16-inch dual-toned machined alloy wheels in 2018 Edition which adds up to the style quotient. Other variants continue to sport the same 15-inch wheels. The glossy black finish on the ORVMs and the contrasting black roof complements the car in a perfect manner.

Coming to the rear, practically there hasn’t been much this time. A minor chrome strip boot can be seen with an eagle eye only while there is smoked effect on the tail lamps. The slightly redesigned bumper has been carried forward from the previous model. And don’t forget that cute little lip spoiler which really pleasing to eyes. Overall, the already good looking Rapid has now become slightly better.

Mileage Running Cost

The new Skoda Rapid employs the fuel-efficient engines of the Vento sedan. The claimed fuel efficiency of the manual petrol engine stands at 15.41kmpl while the automatic variant delivers slightly less 14.84kmpl. On the other hand, the diesel manual reads 21.13kmpl, the fuel economy of automatic version is nearly similar with the car capable of delivering 21.72kms for a liter of fuel.

Comfort Suspension

Similar to the sibling Vento, the suspension is tuned for excellent damping all around. And even there is a bit of crashing and beating through bad roads, the ride quality does not unsettle and remains rock solid even at highway speeds. The car feels flattered at the corners with least body roll.

However, the steering is a little vague through the curves and bends but it is light and precise. At driving at city speeds, it is considerably heavy as against rivals such as Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna.

Engine Performance

The car continues to employ the same set of diesel and petrol engines working in other family cars. The 1.6L MPI 4-cylinder petrol engine makes 105PS and 153Nm of peak torque. The transmission options include 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic with tiptronic manual gear-change.

While the engine pumps out enough power, it’s not an energetic performer. However, maximum thrust is available in the narrow band after 3500rpm while the peak power can be gained only near the redline. The 6-speed automatic transmission does a fairly good job but it is not as smooth as the 7-speed DSG in the diesel. However, it won’t give you room for complaints during everyday driving.

The 1.5L TDi diesel engine is the updated one which debuted in the Volkswagen Ameo. The powertrain produces 110PS and max torque at 250Nm. The diesel engine is the most popular choice among the buyers and this is because of its outright performance and fun-to-drive quotient.

The engine when paired to 5-speed manual gearbox is quite a blast. There is minimum turbo lag and there is loads of torque available until the turbo takes the charge. In fact, it’s pretty possible to get through the snail-paced traffic in the third gear. And if you find an open stretch of road, then you would see the free-revving engine delivering a constant stream of power. The automatic 7-speed DSG is just the icing on the cake. The shifts are quick and there is also a Sport mode available which allows you to enter into the fun driving mode.

Braking Safety

The brakes of Skoda Rapid deserve special mention. The setup is absolutely brilliant and confidence inspiring. The bite force is strong and the car stops without any trouble. As far as safety is concerned, the car comes with dual front airbags which are standard across the variants.

Move up and the higher variants offer features including ABS, ESC, Hill Hold Control, rear parking camera with sensors, anti-glare rear-view mirror, acoustic warning signal for overrun speed and automatic fuel-cut in case of a crash.

Not a good deal in its segment

I bought this car last year and was really happy about it. But eventually I came to realise that this Skoda is definitely not the best buy in this price bracket. The car looks very nice and also has a comfortable cabin. However, when it comes to the overall performance and fuel efficiency, the Rapid fails badly. It is a Read More

Great vehicle IF youre lucky and don't face issues

I have a diesel Rapid (Elegance). Simply loved this vehicle - it was truly elegant -the design, the power the engine delivers and the stability of the car even on high speeds. Unfortunately, I had an issue with a coil warning light blinking on my dashboard. It kept recurring thrice this year. The first two times, I was advised about Read More
