Safari is the name which has been the backbone for Tata Motors for about two decades. It is one of the oldest SUVs coming from the Tata’s stable and help the carmaker earned fame in the Indian market. The new Safari Storme takes the legacy further with more muscularity, more comfort and more practicality. It’s been half a decade since the company first introduced the model in the country. Since then it’s been doing quite well in the market. Tata Safari Storme is a step ahead of its predecessor in every aspect with brilliant engineering. The company from time and now provided the vehicle with lot of updates and tweaks. The new Tata Safari Storme gets multiple changes on the inside and out along with the engine updates for better power output.
Tata Safari Storme looks huge and bulky from the outside. The car is based on its sibling ARIA’s platform that receives more strong Hydro formed chassis. The vehicle is much lighter as compared to its predecessor for improved the fuel efficiency. The outer design of the Storme is much dynamic and bold from every angle that makes the vehicle look aggressive. The front façade receives dual slat radiator grille that meet the large pulled back head lights. The thick band is fixed just above the grille that showcases the STORME embossing, it looks quite appealing. Fog lamps are placed at the lower side of bumper and small air intakes.
At the sides, Tata Storme gets multiple creases with flared wheel arches. Moving on to the rear, it has been completely redesigned and the noticeable change is the removal of spare wheel from the back. As for the dimensions, Tata Safari Storme measures 4655 mm in length, 1965 mm in width and 1922 mm in height. The overall wheelbase stands at 2650mm while the ground clearance is 200mm and boot space is 981L. Tata Safari Storme is available in various colour pallets to choose from such as Sky Grey, Urban Bronze, Arctic White, Pearl White and Arctic Silver.
Checking the interiors, the updated Tata Safari storme gets updated features as compared to its previous model. Its dual tone colour scheme goes well with the splashes of silver at places. The dashboard is styled very modestly and the quality of the material used is up to the mark. The cabin offers abundance of space for the front as well as for the rear passengers. The features included in the list are steering mounted audio controls, electrically adjustable rear view mirror, height adjustable driver seat, air conditioning unit, electrically operated remote fuel flap, rear parking sensor and rear parking camera. Other features are all power windows along with express down feature, 3-position lumbar support, ConnnectNext infotainment system with USB, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.
As for the specifications, Tata Safari Storme is available with diesel engine only with two different state of tune. Its gets 2.2L DOHC VARICOR oil burner that is capable of generating the power output of 150PS and belts out the maximum torque of 320Nm. The mill comes mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. Another powertrain is the same with VARICOR400 that generates higher power figures. It can churn the power output of 156PS and yields the peak torque of 400Nm. This engine comes with 6-speed manual transmission. VARICOR 400 variant can be availed with shift-on-fly 4X4 system. The Tata Safari Storme delivers the claimed mileage figures of 14.1kmpl.
Tata Safari Storme come packed with the numerous safety aspects, the features includes dual airbags for driver and passenger, Anti-Lock braking system with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, side Impact bars, Reverse Guide System with Display in IRVM, Rear fog lamp with Reflex Reflector, Central locking, child safety lock and Door ajar warning. Other safety features includes Headlamp beam adjuster, Turn indicators on ORVM, Rear Wiper, Antiglare Rear View mirror and Seat Belt unfastened warning.
Tata Safari Storme is available in three different variants such as EX, LX and VX. The pricing for the same starts from Rs. 10.67 lakh and goes up to Rs. 15.92 lakh. The base variant Safari Storme LX is available at the price tag of Rs. 10.67 lakh while its top selling variant Safari Storme EX is tagged at Rs. 12.72 lakh. The Storme VX Varicor 400 is available at the price tag of Rs. 14.28 lakh while its 4WD variant is tagged at Rs. 15.92 lakh, ex-showroom. Tata Safari Storme rivals against the likes such as Mahindra Scorpio, Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and Renault Captur among others in the segment.
The cabin is one of the areas where Tata has played smart with respect to the facelifted version. The earlier version of Safari Storme was not visually appealing especially when we compare it to recent cars launched by Tata Motors. In this latest model it seems Tata has put plenty of efforts. The dashboard with dual-tone scheme looks a lot neater with quality and fit and finish significantly enhanced. The steering wheel has been shared from the Zest sedan which is a nice addition. Though the dashboard is better, the design isn’t contemporary.
Coming to the ergonomics, the buttons and switches on the centre console are slick to operate but sadly look outdated if we see from today’s perspective. Regarding space, the SUV continues to offer plenty of it and the comfort levels improved several notches with better seat cushioning and fabrics. This time around, Tata has updated the seat fabrics to Java Black with silver accents to enhance the visual appeal. While two adults can seat comfortably on the second row, the jump seats in the third row is ideal for kids as adults will struggle for adequate head space and knee room.
The equipment list has also been slightly updated. In the age of touchscreens, the carmaker is relying on the conventional setup. However, what is good here that the infotainment has been updated with new Harman ConnectNext system with 6 speakers. The unit also offers Bluetooth handsfree as well as allows feeds from reverse parking sensors. There is also option for USB and Aux-In connectivity. So, there is no dearth of features in terms of music and connectivity but still it lags behind in the age where Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are becoming part of every segment.
The chunky steering is good to hold and soft to touch while it now also houses controls for the ConnectNext infotainment. Other comfort and convenience in the car include electrically adjustable ORVMs, height adjustable driver seat, HVAC, roof mounted rear ac vents with cooling coil, electrically operable fuel flap, 3-position lumbar support, 60:40 second row split and arm rest for driver and co-driver. Also, the instrument cluster remains unchanged with MID still missing. All you get is trip meter, digital clock and outside temperature display along with conventional speedo and tachometer. Also, lack of rear view camera and automatic climate control in such a car is something which would not under the throat of buyer.
First glance at the new Tata Safari Storme will not reveal the details, it actually needs a lot of attention to that. The most prominent change is the Land Rover inspired blackened honeycomb grille. The SUV now features projector headlamps which are standard across all the variants. The headlights works just fine and gels well with the overall front profile. The LED daytime running lamps could have uplifted the premiumness of the vehicle.
The side gets new Varicor badge near the wheel arches or front fenders while the overall silhouette remains identical. The ORVMs comes integrated with turn indicators while the 17 inch alloy wheels make a solid road presence. The rear profile remains the same with flat tail lights, rear spoiler, a thick chrome bar on the boot and dual exhaust pipes.
Visually, there is nothing great at the rear. Tata could have revised the tail lights which look pretty odd in this age. Overall, the car remains majorly unchanged which is pretty disappointing, Tata could have added some novelty to the overall design.
Since it’s an SUV, we can’t demand much. But still the car is able to deliver healthy mileage figures. The ARAI certified mileage of Tata Safari Storme stands at 14.1kmpl. The real world figures will definitely vary and one can get around 9kmpl in cities and around 12kmpl on open stretches.
The facelift brings no change to the suspension setup and it is ok, why fix something which ain’t broken. The earlier model offered great ride quality so the performance is the same in the facelifted version. The double wishbone type with coil spring over shock absorber at the front and rear Coil spring type 5 link rigid axle suspension enables the car to glide over ruts and broken roads like a breeze. However, if you are going over bad roads, the jolts can be directly felt on the steering which could be irritating for some.
On the contrary, the high ground clearance comes handy when exchanging tough terrains. One of the strongest points of this car is the handling, thanks to its tallness and high centre of gravity. At bends, the weight of the car can be clearly experienced. The confidence is subdued by the plenty of body roll. However, the wide tyres offer nice grip level.
The hydraulic power steering offers adequate weight at high speeds. But conversely, it is not as light as in the Scorpio while commuting in cities or at parking speeds. However, the low turning radius make things easier in urban premises.
The engine under the hood can now be availed in two different variations. The base models are powered by 2.2L DOHC Varicor diesel engine with direct injection common rail technology. The engine produces 150PS and 320Nm of torque and paired to 5-speed manual transmission. It is the same engine which was working in yesteryear’s Aria. Though the engine is responsive, there is clear turbo lag and this makes the SUV a bit difficult to manage within the urban areas. The gearbox is notchy and the driver will find it difficult to slot in the proper gear. Moreover, the tall gearing by the carmaker does not help it either. However, the same characteristic can make it a wonderful mille muncher.
The other engine comes with the same displacement and technology but the ‘Varicor 400’ makes things different. This engine powers the top end variants including the 4x4 one, producing 6PS more power and increased torque of 80Nm. Well, the power is not the thing that brings the real change here, but the 25 percent more torque. And yes, these figures are clearly noticeable as the car behaves much better in gears and is also more drivable in urban areas.
The throttle response is improved and gets more thrust on the highways. Thanks to the 6-speed gearbox which helps the SUV cruise much better on the open stretches as compared to the other engine variation. The increased output also makes the accelerator faster and in fact, it is quicker by 1.2 seconds than the low powered version.
In terms of braking, the all disc brakes works fine, it might not have sharpest of the biteforce but can be relied upon. It can be said that the overall braking performance is safe and predictable. Further, what would be a disappointing factor for those who are buying the base variant is that there is no dual airbags and ABS with EBD.
But for those buying the top model will be having these goodies plus other aspects such as ultrasonic reverse guide system with graphic display on the infotainment screen, front fog lamps and rear fog lamps with reflex reflector. Other safety features common across the variants include central locking and child safety lock, side impact bars, crumple zones, engine immobilizer and seat belt warning.
