Volkswagen in India is popularly known for its two most famous and crucial models; the Polo hatchback and the Vento sedan. These two models have given the Indian car buyers the taste of fine German engineering. However, there is another dimension Volkswagen has reached to please the elite car buyers. The Volkswagen Jetta which was first introduced in the year 2008, has attracted quite a number of buyers who are interested in German saloons. The current model launched in 2015 comes with few cosmetic updates. Volkswagen has recently showcased the seventh gen Jetta at the 2018 Detroit motor show. The brand new car will be built on the new MQB platform and comes packed with additional features. The engine and launch date are yet to be revealed.
Talking about the outer design, sixth-generation Volkswagen Jetta is now longer by 90mm and its wheelbase is increased by 58mm. The platform is not at all new but the same PQ35 platform which underpins cars including Yeti, Laura and fifth generation Jetta. The design is all about simplicity, the vehicle gets minor tweaks for a fresh look. The front profile gets revised radiator grille with horizontal slats coated with chrome while there are new bi-xenon headlights adding more to the premiumness. The side profile is similar to the previous model while its rear profile has been revised with the tailgate getting the updated sharp tail lights and revamped bumper. The car is available in five graceful colour options including Pure White, Toffee Brown, Reflex Silver, Blue Silk and Deep Black.
Inside the cabin, you will notice the similar layout as its predecessor, no major changes are there. The Jetta gets a new flat-bottomed steering wheel, the instrument cluster has been changed which now also alerts the driver on fatigue. Other features that remain the same are 6-way adjustable driver’s seat, 3-spoke multifunctional steering wheel, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and glove box with cooling feature. The car continues to be available with touchscreen audio system with 8-speakers and USB, Bluetooth and Aux-in connectivity.
The vehicle is loaded with a range of safety aspects. Volkswagen Jetta gets 5 star NCAP rating, thanks to the top-notch safety aspects. The safety features include 6 airbags, crash-optimized front end, Electronic stability control, ISOFIX, Engine brake assist, Electronic differential lock, ABS, EBD intelligent crash response system, electronic engine immobilizer, seat belt tensioners (front), central locking and hill hold control.
Volkswagen Jetta has no mechanical changes, it carries forward the same engine from its predecessor. The car gets the 1.4L petrol and 2.0L diesel mill with the former making 122PS and peak torque of 200Nm, latter producing power output of 140PS and belts out the peak torque of 320Nm. In terms of transmission, petrol mill comes with the only the manual gearbox while the diesel engine is available with 6-speed manual as well as 7-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox.
Volkswagen Jetta is available in three variants Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline. The price tag starts from Rs. 14.15 lakh and goes upto Rs. 20.17 lakh, ex-showroom. The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta competes against Toyota Corolla Altis, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra and Skoda Octavia in the segment.
Though the cabin quality is top notch, it seems a little low when we compare it to the older model. There are refreshments inside but they are subtle. The car gets new twin-tube instrument panel which is highlighted by chrome. The instrument cluster now gives additional information on fatigue detection system which senses the driving style based on steering inputs and alerts the driver. The 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel has been borrowed from new Polo hatchback and Vento sedan, however, here the addition includes paddle shifters and a couple of additional buttons for cruise control and volume.
In terms of space, the sedan has a large amount of headroom and legroom at the back while the under-thigh support is decent as well. Thanks to the longer wheelbase which is instantly evident the moment you step inside the car. Sitting on the front can be an awesome experience for long travellers as the seats can let even the 6-footer to stretch his legs. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable while both the front seats offer height adjustment and lumbar support. The visibility and driving position is good and if you have driven other Volkswagen cars you will realize that the ergonomics are pretty decent.
Some people might get shocked hearing that the car has missed on leather seats. In terms of equipment too, the carmaker consciously missed some of the goodies such as a sunroof and reversing camera. Although, the carmaker has provided a touchscreen music system powered by 8-speakers with USB, 6-CD changer, Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity, the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay experience will be missed. The touchscreen also relays feeds from the rear parking camera. Other features inside the car include climatronic dual-zone air conditioner, tilt and adjustable functionality for the steering, rain sensors, park distance control, auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, rear ac vents, 60:40 rear seat split and 12V socket at both front and rear among others.
Volkswagen is known for its simplistic design approach and the Jetta is no exception. The exterior changes in this latest version are only subtle but enough to keep the interest of the buyers intact. The front fascia gets xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and dynamic cornering system. The headlights no doubt are sharper than before while the new grille design is the one which can be found in other cars in the family. The three chrome slat merges seamlessly with the headlights, giving the car a cool effect. The front bumper features a wider air dam while the bonnet does seem to provide a wider stance to the car.
Side profile of the car remains intact even the 16-inch alloy wheels are carried forward. Other minor changes can be seen in the form of refined rain gutters on the roof. At the rear, there are substantial differences but for a naïve, it’s difficult to spot them. At a closer look, the rear profile is much cleaner while the boot lid comes with an integrated lip spoiler. The car gets revamped tail lights which are sharper and comes with a neat looking block in the lower section. Revised bumper wrap up the upgrade at the rear section.
The carmaker has claimed improved fuel economy in the updated version. However, in the real world, it won’t be much noticeable. The new Volkswagen Jetta delivers ARAI certified mileage of 19.33kmpl for the manual diesel and 16.96 for the DSG automatic. The petrol engine, on the other hand, returns 14.69kmpl.
The ride and handling is one of the sheer advantages of owning this saloon. The Jetta has always demonstrated a reasonable balance between sportiness and comfort. The carmaker has installed a reasonably firm suspension setup but it still shows compliancy while driving. The electric steering offers a good degree of confidence.
In terms of road handling, where on one side the car manages to absorb road undulations, keeping the passengers free from jolts and bumps, on the other, it dashes through corners with confident and least body roll. The saloon is well-engineered and feels solid to drive with the blend of suspension and chassis really incredible. There are not many cars in this price range that will give you this level of comfort.
The 2015 Jetta continues to source its power from the 1.4L 4-cylinder TSI petrol and 2.0L TDI diesel engine. The petrol motor makes 122PS and 200Nm of torque paired to 6-speed manual gearbox. On the contrary, the diesel engine produces 140PS of power and 320Nm of torque, mated to 6-speed manual or DSG dual clutch automatic transmission.
The company hasn’t made up its mind yet to introduce the powerful engine which is working under the hood of sibling Skoda Octavia. This might be because the Octavia uses new MQB platform and the Jetta still uses the old PQ35 platform. However, irrespective of the low powered engines, the Jetta doesn’t feel underpowered at all. The dual-clutch DSG gearbox shifts up and down smoothly.
When driving the manual transmission version, the driver unleashes the harness of the gearbox with steering paddle shifter making the drive effortless and fun. The spirit of the turbocharged vehicle can be seen in the petrol version which is free revving and unruffled, especially when driven in the mid-range. And the 6-speed manual gearbox enhances the fun-to-drive factor with its precise inputs and well-spaced shifts. The carmaker is still shying away from introducing petrol automatic which is no less than a surprise.
The powerful brakes match the kind of performance the car is capable of. The brakes are commanding and instill confidence even at high speeds. In terms of safety, the car has a bunch of active and passive features. It comes loaded with 6 airbags, Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with brake assist, electronic stability control (ESC), anti-slip regulation (ASR), hill hold control, ISOFIX child seats mounting for 2 seats on rear and central locking with two remote control folding keys. And what’s interesting is that all these features are standard across the variants.
